Marloes Road is probably named after Marloes, a village in Pembrokeshire, the home county of the Edwardes family who owned this land.
Italianate terraces on Lexham Gardens
Lord Kensington's surveyor, Martin Stutely, drew up the plan for Lexham Gardens in October 1869, once Cromwell Road had been built. It was called Lexham Road at first; a communal garden was added at the eastern end in 1877 and the name changed the next year. The busiest builder was Samuel Juler Wyand, who put up more than 100 houses and many mews buildings here between 1872 and 1884, starting with the four Marloes Road terraces either side of the openings into Lexham Gardens. John Sprake, fresh from building Cromwell Road itself, added Nos. 120 to 146: white brick with stucco dressings, bay windows, Doric porticoes, and four storeys over a semi-basement.
Houses that size are often divided into flats now. In a divided house the kitchen may be down in the semi-basement or squeezed into a back room on an upper floor, and there is rarely a lift. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately either way, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand, over dust sheets.
Kensington Green, on the old workhouse site
The eight acres immediately north of Lexham Gardens held Kensington's workhouse from the 1840s. An infirmary followed in 1871, which became St Mary Abbots Hospital and was demolished in 1992. What replaced it is Kensington Green, a private gated estate of houses and flats in neo-Victorian Italianate style by the architects Norman and Dawbarn, with St Mary's Gate and Chantry Square as its streets. Thomas Allom's workhouse block of 1848, Stone Hall, survives; it was listed Grade II in 1989 and is now flats.
Renting round Lexham Gardens
The census area covering this end of Lexham Gardens and Kensington Green (Kensington and Chelsea 013A) had 732 households in 2021, and 65.8% of them rented privately. Only 32.4% owned and 1.8% rented from the council or a housing association. 63.2% lived in a purpose-built block and 29.2% in part of a converted or shared house. Parking on Lexham Gardens and Marloes Road
On Kensington and Chelsea's single yellow line map, Lexham Gardens and the southern half of Marloes Road are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. The map dates its information to April 2020, so go by the sign on your street. The council's guide says pay-by-phone bays are free on Sundays across most of the borough, and its exception for Holland ward does not reach this far south.
