Kensal Rise began as a building scheme. Once a farm lease was surrendered in 1888, All Souls College, Oxford, laid out Chamberlayne Road across its land, starting in 1893 and reaching the railway station by 1895; the station, opened in 1873 as Kensal Green, had been renamed Kensal Rise in 1890.
Pargeted terraces off Chamberlayne Road
Two builders, Charles Langler and Charles Pinkham, put up many of the houses. Their best-known street is Clifford Gardens, built in 1896: houses designed to look like semi-detached pairs but joined in terraces of twelve, every gable covered in plaster pargeting that ranges from simple geometric patterns to figures, coats of arms, animals and sea monsters. Brent's appraisal calls it unique in the borough for having pargeting along the whole street. The same pair built the rows at 127 to 161 and 130 to 192 Chamberlayne Road, identical to their houses on Harvist Road in Queen's Park.
The houses have long outriggers at the back, where the kitchen usually sits in a house of this type. Kept whole, one may have room for a double oven or a 90cm range; split into flats, it is more likely to have a compact built-in single on each floor. The work is the same in both. Dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
In Brent's Queens Park ward, which takes in Kensal Rise, 27.8% of the 7,043 households in 2021 had a terraced house to themselves, about twice the share in Harlesden and Kensal Green ward next door (14.3%). Another 34.1% lived in part of a converted or shared house, and 43.6% owned their home.
Flats over Station Terrace and in the old library
Close to the station there are flats over the shops. Keslake Mansions, 1 to 7 Station Terrace, was built by William Herbert Stone between 1898 and 1900, with stained glass in the sash windows of the flats upstairs, and the parades along Chamberlayne Road have timber street doors to the flats above them. Kensal Rise Library on Bathurst Gardens, opened by Mark Twain in September 1900, was converted in 2015 with homes on the upper floors and the library on the ground floor.
In the small census area around the station (Brent 032E), 48.9% of the 1,083 households rented privately in 2021, against 34.0% across the ward. Letting agents can have the invoice in the agency's name and photos for the checkout file. For an upper-floor flat, mention the floor when you call.

Kensal Rise parking zones: KR, KL, KQ and KS
On Brent's zone map Station Terrace and Dagmar Gardens are in zone KR; Clifford Gardens, Leigh Gardens and Whitmore Gardens are in KL; Keslake Road, Chevening Road and Peploe Road are in KQ. All three are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. Further north, Okehampton Road is in zone KS, controlled only from 10am to 3pm on weekdays, while Crediton Road, Dundonald Road and Wrentham Avenue form a part of KS that runs 8am to 6.30pm. Brent's list of zones gives no weekend hours for any of them, so a Saturday or Sunday visit, at the weekday price, falls outside those permit hours. Brent's zone map also shows an August bank holiday Monday restriction until 10.30pm in KQ and parts of KR, which the list does not mention, so check the signs that weekend.

Brent. The streets around the station are in Brent's Queens Park ward. Westminster begins at the Queen's Park estate, the numbered avenues south of Kilburn Lane; Queen's Park has its own page. South of the railway is Kensal Green.
My Clifford Gardens house is still one house, with a range cooker. How long will it take?
A 90cm range takes two to three hours and a double about two. You check the oven, lit, before we pack up.
Do I need a visitor permit at the weekend?
Not for the zone hours on Brent's list: KR, KL, KQ and KS are weekday zones, and weekends cost the same as weekdays. Check the signs on your street. On a weekday, a visitor permit for the van lets us park close.
