Brent's appraisal of the Kensal Green conservation area dates the terrace at 822 to 834 Harrow Road to between 1816 and 1824, and counts the group among the oldest homes left in the borough.

The conservation area, designated in March 1990, is a single strip: numbers 776 to 864 on the north side of Harrow Road. The road is the borough boundary here. Opposite the strip, the south side is Kensal Green Cemetery, which belongs to Kensington and Chelsea and is a registered park and garden in its own right, so the houses facing it are in Brent. The main building phase came in the two decades after 1840, with three-storey town houses such as 836 to 840, and the villa at 842 is listed. The same appraisal notes the pressure to split the larger houses into smaller units.
Victorian cottages between Harrow Road and the railway
Most of Kensal Green is later and smaller. Brent's archive history counts 675 people here in 1861 and 2,138 in 1871, and says that in the following decades many two-storey cottages went up: on United Land Company plots north of Harrow Road and west of College Road, and on Edward Vigers' land in the triangle between Harrow Road and the railway. A girl at school in 1900 remembered 18 shops in Hazel Road. By 1971 a quarter of the terraced homes west of Chamberlayne Road still lacked full amenities, yet plans to clear them came to nothing and the houses were done up instead.
Many of those cottages are now flats. In the census area that takes in Wakeman, Halstow and Rainham roads, 45.0% of the 634 households in 2021 lived in part of a converted or shared house, and 29.0% had a terraced house to themselves. A flat cut from a two-storey cottage often has a small kitchen, with a built-in single or a freestanding cooker. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, and the door is split where its design allows.

The price depends on what you have, a single, a double, a 90cm range or an AGA, and it is fixed on the phone before the visit, on either side of the railway.
Parking in Brent's zones KR and KG
Brent's zone list gives the same weekday hours for both zones that meet at Kensal Green: 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. On the council's zone map, Hazel Road, Purves Road and the southern end of College Road are in KR, while Harrow Road by the cemetery, Wakeman Road and Rainham Road are in KG. Two exceptions are worth knowing. Victor Road and Napier Road, at the western end of KR, are controlled 8.30am to 9pm every day.
Outside those weekday hours, a Saturday or Sunday visit, at the weekday price, falls outside the zone hours, except on Victor Road and Napier Road and on the August bank holiday weekend in KG. The signs on your street give the rules, and there is more on Brent's list of zones.

The homes on Harrow Road and north of it are in Brent; the cemetery on the south side is in Kensington and Chelsea. North of the railway the streets run on into Kensal Rise, and to the east into Queen's Park.
My flat is the first floor of a cottage. Is the kitchen too small?
No. The cavity, the fan cover and the glass are cleaned by hand in the kitchen, with dust sheets down, and the racks, trays and runners that lift out are soaked and cleaned separately.
Can I book on the August bank holiday Monday?
Yes, and weekends cost the same as weekdays. In zone KG that day is controlled until 10.30pm, so the van would need a visitor permit; check the signs on your street.
How long will a double oven take?
About two hours, and a single about 90 minutes. You look inside the lit oven before we pack up.
