Cleaver Square was laid out in 1789, and Lambeth's conservation area statement calls it the earliest square south of the Thames. It was Princes Square until 1937. Ten years before the rename, Lambeth Council bought the square to keep its central garden from being built on.
Georgian terraces over semi-basements
The square's late 18th-century terraces are irregular: some are three storeys over a semi-basement, others two storeys with a mansard roof, and the early 19th-century houses that followed are three storeys over a semi-basement, with basement steps behind small paved front areas. Kennington Road, Kennington Park Road and Cleaver Square have the grandest houses, with larger gardens than the rest. Kennington station, on Kennington Park Road since 1890, is itself just over the line in Southwark.
In a house like this the kitchen may be in the semi-basement, or the basement may have become a separate flat. The racks, trays and runners then come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity and the door glass are degreased by hand downstairs. A big family kitchen in one of these houses is the kind that may have a double oven or a range cooker.
The Duchy of Cornwall's 1913 cottages
In the angle between Kennington Lane and Sancroft Street, the Duchy of Cornwall began rebuilding its own land in 1913-15. Adshead and Ramsay designed Courtenay Square, Courtenay Street and Cardigan Street: two-storey Regency-style terraces in stock brick with trellis porches, round a square of clipped limes. J D Coleridge designed Denny Street and Denny Crescent, two-storey red-brick cottages, some with Dutch gables. The London County Council's Kennings Estate followed in 1927-28, seven blocks of flats named after manors of the Duchy.
Still, the squares are the exception. In Kennington ward at the 2021 Census, 73.4% of the roughly 6,500 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 12.4% in a terraced house. 48.0% rented from the council or a housing association, 23.2% rented privately and 26.3% owned outright or with a mortgage.

Parking on Kennington's side streets
Kennington Park Road, Kennington Road and Kennington Lane are busy through roads, so the van needs a bay in a side street. Lambeth's zones do not all share one timetable: its parking FAQ lists Monday to Friday, Monday to Saturday and Monday to Sunday controls, and puts the hours on the "Controlled Zone" sign as you enter. Outside those hours permit bays, shared bays and single yellow lines can be used free; double yellow lines apply at any time. A weekend visit costs the same as a weekday one, so where the zone has no weekend controls, Saturday or Sunday is the easy option.
