RAF Kenley in the Battle of Britain
Kenley was first used as a Royal Flying Corps aerodrome in 1917. An Act of Parliament in 1939 led to a rebuild with two all-weather runways, each 800 yards long, finished in December 1939, and by April 1940 twelve fighter pens stood round the perimeter track, enough to shelter 24 aircraft. Eleven of those pens survive and have been scheduled monuments since September 2004. The Luftwaffe attacked the station heavily in 1940, and a raid on 18 August set the hangars alight and killed RAF staff. The RAF stopped using Kenley as a front-line airfield in 1959, and gliders fly from it now.

Kenley was only a lane and a farm before the railway came. A station opened in 1856 on the Caterham line, called Coulsdon at first and soon renamed Kenley; its original building on Hayes Lane, designed by Richard Whittall, is listed Grade II. Large houses went up on the farmland from the mid-1860s, shops went up by the station, and a smaller, less wealthy settlement grew at Little Roke. From the 1950s many of the biggest Victorian and Edwardian houses were split into flats, turned into nursing homes or knocked down for smaller houses and bungalows. Hayes Lane and Old Lodge Lane, which runs south from Reedham, keep some of the best of the older buildings.
