Faesten Dic, a Saxon boundary dike thrown up around 1,500 years ago, runs for more than a kilometre through the wood the estate takes its name from. The name itself comes from William Jordayne, a Dartford man of the 16th century, and the first record of a wood on this site is from 1600. Archaeologists turned up a medieval hall in the 1950s, occupied somewhere between about 1280 and 1320.
The estate sits in two counties at once
Administration of the estate is split between the London Borough of Bexley and the Borough of Dartford in Kent, which is why the postcode flips between DA5 and DA2 depending on which side of the line a road falls on, and why the buses through here include both a TfL route, the B12, and Go-Coach's 429 running out of Kent. Several thousand people live on it. Bexley is the nearest station, about 1.8 miles off.
Bungalows and 1930s detached, mostly
Summerhouse Drive is bungalows. Birchwood Road runs to 1930s detached houses, plenty of them extended, and Pinewood Place at the DA2 7W end is newer build. Bungalow kitchens in stock like this tend to hold a freestanding cooker or an under-counter single, while the bigger detached houses are where 90cm ranges show up. How the clean runs
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out and go into a heated tank in the van. Cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so nothing is left smelling of chemicals. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we go.

Does it matter whether my side is Bexley or Dartford?
Not to us. Both sides of the estate are covered and the price is identical either way. The line only decides who takes your council tax.
Do you need my sink or an outside tap?
No. The tank and the water are both in the van.
Will the kitchen smell afterwards?
It should not. The soaking happens outside, and what gets used indoors on the cavity and glass is non-caustic.
How long does a single oven take?
Around ninety minutes. A double runs closer to two hours.
