Downs Hall, a farmhouse thought to date from the first half of the 18th century, is the oldest property in Istead Rise; in 1897 Downs Farm was put up for auction as 28 plots.

One of those plots was called Isteads; the 1839 tithe map gives the same plot as Highstead, a high place. After the sale the majority holder was a London company, Rutters, and from 1898 the minutes of Northfleet Urban District Council record applications from Rutters and from individuals for houses and smallholdings. Before the name spread to the wider area, Istead Rise was one road of four (with Wrotham Road, Lewis Road and Downs Road) at the southern tip of Northfleet. Large commercial nurseries and an orchard were laid out between 1900 and 1939.
The roads that fill the area now came later. St Barnabas church was built in 1960 and 1961, Istead Rise Primary School opened on 6 January 1966, and by 1974 the electoral roll held 1,350 voters. Today's streets include Worcester Close, Bramley Close, Northumberland Road and Brookside Road.
Semis and detached houses, mostly owned outright
The 2021 Census counted 1,383 households in Istead Rise ward as it then was. About 1,380 of them were counted by dwelling type: 61.5% lived in a semi-detached house and 35.2% in a detached one, and flats of any kind came to under 1%. More than half the households, 54.8%, owned their home outright.
A house that has been owned for a long time has often had its kitchen refitted at least once, and a refit is often when a built-in double oven takes the place of a freestanding cooker. Doubles come in two shapes, and both are priced as a double.

No. It has two ovens, so it is £110, and it takes about 2 hours.

Yes. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic one £23, added to the oven price.
Do you come out to Istead Rise at weekends?
Yes, seven days a week, and a Saturday or Sunday visit costs the same as a weekday one.
