The 1912 electoral register listed fewer than 40 houses here, and by the mid-1930s there were about 90, most of them strung along Downs Road between commercial nurseries and a large orchard. Then it filled in. The name is younger than it sounds, first showing up on a 1907 Ordnance Survey map as a road name and possibly taken from Highstead, a field in the 1838 Northfleet tithe award.

Istead Rise Primary School opened on 6 January 1966 for the children those roads brought. Meopham is the nearest at about 1.7 miles, roughly 34 minutes into Victoria, and Ebbsfleet International is about 3.7 miles off. The A2 is the road to London. The 2011 census counted 3,437 residents, which makes this a suburb three miles south of Gravesend rather than a town in its own right, though the parade runs to an Indian restaurant, fish and chip shop, butcher, pharmacy, Co-op and dry cleaner, with a hairdresser, florist and dentist on Lewis Road. The community centre was destroyed by arson during a burglary in 2007 and reopened, rebuilt, in December 2008.

Where the design allows, yes, and the glass is split so the film between the panes comes out. Some doors are sealed by the maker and stay shut.
Mine is a freestanding cooker, not a built-in one. Is that different?
No. Racks, shelves and trays lift out and soak in the tank the same way. We pull it forward and clean the sides if there is room.
The oven has not been touched in ten years. Is that a problem?
Not for the tank. Bad ones take longer, not more money, because the price is per appliance.
Can you do the microwave while you are here?
Yes, £22 on top.
