Imperial Wharf station opened on 27 September 2009 where the West London line crosses Townmead Road. The council said plans for it had been stuck for more than 15 years, and the developer St George was the principal funder of the £7 million package that finally built it.
The riverside estate St George built
The station took its name from the flats. Outline permission was granted in 1998 for 1,665 homes on the whole Imperial Wharf site, 815 of them affordable, and full permission for a first phase of 1,065 homes followed in 2002. By June 2005, when the Mayor's planners reviewed two late blocks (applicant St George, architects Broadway Malyan), much of the scheme was built or under way. The park beside it links Townmead Road with the river walk and has a children's playground and a boating pond; in 2009 the council said St George owned and had paid for it and would maintain it, and expected it to open formally on 30 September 2009. A short walk from the station, St George's Chelsea Creek scheme, which the developer describes as part of Imperial Wharf, has canalside homes on streets such as Thurstan Street and a 24-hour concierge.
Kitchens in blocks of this age are fitted ones, so the oven is usually integrated: a single under the hob, or a single or double at eye level in a tall housing. Some newer models are pyrolytic. Whatever the model, the shelves, racks and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat over dust sheets.

Imperial Wharf and Chelsea Creek are in Sands End ward. At the 2021 Census 61.7% of the 5,137 households counted in the housing-type table lived in a purpose-built block of flats. Parking on the estates and in zone Z
On the council's zone map, the station, Townmead Road beside it, The Boulevard and the Thurstan Street blocks of Chelsea Creek sit outside every controlled parking zone. The older streets just to the west, Maltings Place among them, are in zone Z, which the council's zone table lists as controlled Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm; Imperial Road runs through more than one zone, so read the signs there. On an estate, ask the concierge or managing agent where a visiting trade van may stop for a couple of hours, and pass that on when you book.
