The Imperial Gas Light and Coke Company arrived at Sands End in 1824 and worked this stretch of river for the better part of two centuries, which is why the ground under these balconies was a gasworks long before anyone dropped a kitchen island onto it. St George built the current development between 2004 and 2009 to a Broadway Malyan design: 1,665 apartments, penthouses and townhouses, with about ten acres of landscaped ground between the blocks.

The older Sands End terraces west of the development are the exception, because a rear extension there often carries a freestanding cooker instead.
Lifts, concierges and the trip to the van
Imperial Wharf station sits where the West London line crosses Townmead Road and opened on 27 September 2009, five years into the build. It recorded 2.859 million entries and exits in 2024-25. Chelsea Harbour Pier and its Thames Clippers services are about 250 metres off. None of that helps a technician carrying racks: the shelves, trays and side runners still go down in the lift to soak in the heated tank in the van, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen with non-caustic products.

Will the smell linger in an open-plan flat?
No. The products used indoors are non-caustic, which matters more here than in a house because a Wharf kitchen usually opens straight onto the living space and the balcony door is the only ventilation.

Not outside the door. The van needs somewhere legal within a short walk while the racks soak, so tell us on the phone whether visitor parking or the underground bays are an option.
Is an end-of-tenancy clean different?
