The parish of Ickenham had 443 inhabitants in 1921. Most of the Swakeleys estate was sold the next year, and by 1961 Ickenham ward had 10,370 people.
From the Swakeleys sale to a suburb
The Victoria County History traces the change. By 1934 the western part of the parish was already a residential suburb: a row of shops stood on the south side of Swakeleys Road, which had been Back Lane, houses lined that road to the parish boundary, and larger houses and blocks of flats had gone up near Swakeleys House and along Long Lane. More expensive detached houses were soon to follow round a green at Milton Court. By the time the account was written, in 1961, a large new estate of private houses had been laid out north of Swakeleys Road, at the cost of the old rectory and Ivy House Farm, and there were houses along most of Glebe Avenue.
The result is a place of owners. At the 2021 Census, Ickenham and South Harefield ward had 6,042 households; 38.8% owned outright, 36.3% had a mortgage and 17.2% rented privately. Semis were the commonest home, at 35.5%.
An interwar semi often has a modest kitchen with a built-in single or double, while the bigger detached houses can take a 90cm range. Whatever is there, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, over dust sheets.
The pump, the pond and the conservation area
The old village sat where Swakeleys Road meets Long Lane, with the pump and pond in the middle; the Gothic canopy over the pump went up in 1866. Hillingdon designated the Ickenham Village conservation area on 29 January 1970 and extended it in 1983, 1990 and 2008. The Coach and Horses keeps 17th-century work, and the Jacobean Swakeleys House looks over Swakeleys Park and its lake. There are brick cottages near the pond as well, one of them the former post office.

Ickenham's permit zones IC and IC2
The village roads are in zone IC, among them Long Lane, Milton Court, Hoylake Crescent, Rectory Way and the High Road by the Coach and Horses. Most IC bays are permit-only 9am to 5pm on weekdays, though some run to Saturday. Zone IC2 covers Glebe Avenue, Burnham Avenue, Sussex Road, St Giles Avenue and Austin's Lane, 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Pay-and-display bays charge 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. Those hours are from the draft IC zones order in the council's 10 June 2026 notice, which says its bays accept a zone permit or a visitor voucher; check the plate by the bay. Few bays in the draft apply on a Sunday, and a weekend visit costs the weekday price.
