The houses on the east side of Connaught Square, Nos. 1 to 15, went up in about 1828-30, probably to the design of George Gutch: brown brick over a stucco ground floor, four storeys and a basement, with cast-iron balconies on the first floor.
Squares and terraces north of the park
The homes that take the Hyde Park name are on the north side of Bayswater Road, on the Hyde Park Estate. It was the Bishop of London's Paddington estate, and the Church Commissioners are still its main freeholders. Samuel Pepys Cockerell drew the first layout in 1809; Gutch, who followed him as surveyor, added more squares and bigger houses, among them Hyde Park Square and Hyde Park Gardens. John Crake's terraces at 1-24 Hyde Park Gardens (1836) turn their best fronts south over a private garden towards the park and take their front doors from the north.
Some of those houses are still single homes. In the Census area that runs from Connaught Square to Hyde Park Square, with Albion Street and Stanhope Place, 21.2% of the 567 households in 2021 lived in a terraced house, against 8.7% across Hyde Park ward. Ownership was 42.3%, with 53.5% renting privately.
A four-storey house over a basement has room for a big cooker, and a 90cm range is more likely in one of these than in a flat; the kitchen may also be down in the basement. Either way the racks, trays and runners are lifted out and soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.
Post-war flats on the estate
The estate lost buildings in the war. According to the Victoria County History, in 1957 the Church Commissioners began a general plan by Anthony Minoprio for the 90-acre estate, in partnership with Wates and property companies controlled by Max Rayne and by Basil and Howard Samuel, starting with demolition in Hyde Park Square. Around Oxford Square and Cambridge Square alone the 1962 scheme set out 930 flats and 68 houses for about 4,000 people, with over 1,000 garages, many of them underground. The Water Gardens, finished in 1966, has 250 flats, 6 penthouses and 15 houses on 3 acres.
Flats in post-war blocks of that kind usually have a fitted kitchen with a built-in single or double, and where the block has a lift it saves the stairs. Many of these flats are let, and agents can have the invoice in the agency's name and a key collected for an empty flat by arrangement.

The cooker sets the price, and the figure is agreed on the phone. Wide cookers are where people most often pick the wrong line, so here is the difference:

Parking on the Hyde Park Estate
The estate is in Westminster's zone F, Hyde Park, Marylebone and Fitzrovia. On the council's zone map the streets around Hyde Park Gardens, Sussex Square and Hyde Park Square are sub-zone F1 and those around Connaught Street are F4; resident bays in both are controlled 24 hours a day, every day, and paid bays and single yellow lines from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
Westminster sells no visitor permits for on-street parking. Its daily trade permit covers resident bays from 8am to 5.30pm and paid bays from 8.30am to 6.30pm, but its conditions rule out parking inside the boundaries of the Royal Parks, so the drives in Hyde Park itself are no use for the van.
