The northern part of Old Barrack Yard, a turning off Knightsbridge, is all that remains of the outer parade ground of an infantry barracks for some 500 men; the Survey of London records that the army gave it up in the mid-1830s.
Mews and yards behind the Lanesborough
The streets south-west of the roundabout are the north corner of Belgravia. Westminster's audit of the Belgravia conservation area singles out Kinnerton Street, Wilton Row and Old Barrack Yard: small artisans' houses and mews set around yards and alleys, a mix of small workers' housing and stabling. Belgravia mews are generally entered through an archway off the grander street, and in 1994 the council produced specific design guidelines for Old Barrack Yard and Wilton Row.
The audit describes Belgravia's traditional mews buildings as typically two storeys and small beside the terraces they served, so the kitchen may be on either floor. The racks, trays and side runners are taken out and soaked and cleaned apart, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand indoors, on dust sheets.
Stucco crescents off Grosvenor Place
Wilton Crescent was designed and built by Seth Smith in 1827, a year after building in Belgravia began. Grosvenor Crescent, which curves from the roundabout towards Belgrave Square, includes a conversion: eight listed houses at 3-10, once Red Cross offices, became 15 flats in autumn 2011, with a basement car stacker for 21 cars. The Grosvenor estate managed the scheme. A conversion of that kind usually gets new fitted kitchens with built-in ovens, while a house still in one family's hands is more likely to have a range.
On the Census map these streets (Wilton Crescent, Wilton Place, Kinnerton Street, Motcomb Street and the mews between them) form Westminster 019E. In 2021 it had 476 households: 41.6% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 27.8% in a terraced house and 15.9% in a flat made from a converted house. Over half, 54.4%, rented privately. Parking in Belgravia's zone A2
Hyde Park Corner and Grosvenor Place are Transport for London red routes, so the van needs a side street. From Wilton Place to Grosvenor Crescent that means Westminster's zone A2. Under the council's March 2026 table, paid bays and single yellow lines there are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays; resident bays run 8.30am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday. On a Sunday none of it is controlled.
Westminster has no visitor permit for on-street parking, and a working van may load in a paid or resident bay for only 20 minutes during controlled hours. On a weekday the van needs a paid bay for any stay longer than that, or a trade permit for zone A. The Piccadilly side of the roundabout is a different zone, E, with different hours.
