The Hurlingham Club takes up 42 acres of it, bounded by the Thames south, Hurlingham Park north, Broomhouse Lane east, Napier Avenue and Ranelagh Gardens west. Founded in 1869 out of the old Gun Club, it began as a live pigeon shooting ground and now runs to about 13,000 members, waiting list closed since 2018. Everything residential here is arranged around that green block.
The polo fields are council flats now
Hurlingham wrote the rules of polo in 1873 and most of the world still plays to them, and the first match on the ground was on 6 June 1874, but no polo has been staged here since the war, when the Metropolitan Borough of Fulham compulsorily purchased the polo fields to build the Sulivan Court estate. That decision is why the housing runs to two extremes within a few hundred metres. Estate flats on one side. Large detached and semi-detached houses on the other, including a six-bedroom place on Broomhouse Lane listed at £20m, reported as the priciest SW6 listing in over a decade.
Two kinds of kitchen, one method
Estate and mansion-block flats mostly run a single integrated oven, £77, about ninety minutes. The houses on the club side are where range cookers and the occasional AGA turn up. Hurlingham Court on Ranelagh Gardens is a listed mansion block facing the river, where kitchens are small and there is nowhere to put fumes. Which is the point of the van. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in a heated tank outside; cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand indoors with non-caustic products.
Cameras before bays
The club sits inside the Fulham Clean Air Neighbourhood, where passing an enforcement camera brings a fine from Hammersmith and Fulham. Borough parking charges vary by vehicle emissions. We deal with the route and the bay.

Do you charge more because it is Hurlingham?

My AGA has two ovens. What does that cost and how long?
£143 for a two-oven AGA. It runs longer than a domestic double, and we will cover timing and whether it needs to be off beforehand when you call.
Can you work in a mansion block with no lift access to the flat?
Yes. Parts are carried down to the tank and back, so stairs only add trips.
Is there any smell left in the flat?
There should not be. Nothing caustic comes indoors, and the oven is heat-tested before we leave.
Said after the sign-off
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
