The Hurlingham Club took a lease on the estate in 1869, bought the freehold in 1874 and played its first polo match there that year; its ground off Hurlingham Road was the No. 1 polo ground until 1937.
Polo fields that became a park and an estate
After the war the club lost its polo fields: the London County Council acquired them for housing and a public park, by compulsory purchase in 1951 according to the London Gardens Trust. The No. 1 ground became Hurlingham Park, now 7.9 hectares of pitches and courts. The No. 2 polo field became the Sulivan Court estate, built between 1949 and 1956 for Fulham Borough Council: 432 homes in L-shaped blocks of mainly three to five storeys, set in grass between Broomhouse Lane, Daisy Lane and Peterborough Road. It takes its name from the Sulivans of Broom House, 19th-century local benefactors.
The club's grounds today cover about 42 acres. Round them, Hammersmith and Fulham's Hurlingham conservation area, designated in 1971 and extended in 1981, takes in very different homes: terraces and semi-detached houses west of the club on Ranelagh Gardens and Ranelagh Avenue, built when the railway was extended to Fulham, on the site of the old Ranelagh House; mansion blocks on the river at Hurlingham Court and Rivermead Court; red-brick two-storey terraces on Settrington Road; and large 1930s houses on Peterborough Road.
Big kitchens, ranges and AGAs
In Hammersmith and Fulham's Palace and Hurlingham ward, 27.3% of the 4,645 households owned their home outright at the 2021 Census (tenure table, TS054). In the accommodation-type table (TS044, 4,646 households) 11.0% lived in a semi-detached house and 41.7% in a purpose-built block. A family house can carry a bigger cooker than a flat, and the two need different visits:
- 90cm range cooker
- a freestanding cooker 90cm wide, usually two ovens side by side or one wide oven, with a gas or induction hob on top. Allow 2 to 3 hours on site.
- Two-oven AGA
- a cast-iron cooker that stores heat and is normally left on. It has to be switched off the night before so it is cool when we arrive, and the clean takes about half a day.
The method does not change with the size of the cooker. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, over dust sheets. The AGA cleaning page has more on that job.

The price depends on the cooker: a single, a double, a 90cm range at £143 or a two-oven AGA at £143, fixed on the phone when you book.
Parking zones U and Q, and the camera streets
Hurlingham Road and the Ranelagh streets are in Hammersmith and Fulham's parking zone U, and the Sulivan Court side towards Peterborough Road is in zone Q. Both are controlled Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, so Sunday bays are free. The council issues separate parking permits for housing estates, so on an estate ask the estate office where the van can stop.
South Fulham also has Clean Air Neighbourhood cameras, which the council says are only there to stop drivers taking a shortcut between Wandsworth Bridge Road and New Kings Road. The council says every street can still be reached from one of those two roads without passing a camera. A trial camera on Settrington Road, between Ashcombe Street and Narborough Street, went live on 15 September 2025, and the council says the trial will last up to 18 months. The night before, so it has cooled by the morning. A two-oven AGA is about half a day's work.
Can you do the hob and the hood of a range at the same visit?
Yes. The hob or hood of a range cooker is £48, added to the range price.
Is Sunday a good day for a visit?
Often, yes. Zones U and Q are uncontrolled on Sundays, and a weekend visit costs the weekday price.
My flat is in a Sulivan Court block. Do you need anything?
The floor number, the oven cool when we arrive and a working socket. The price stays as agreed on the phone.
Said after the sign-off
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
