Hornchurch station opened in 1885 on the line from Barking to Upminster, and it put the village, a 'large and busy-looking' industrial one in 1876, within half an hour of London.
How Hornchurch was built up
The Victoria County History of Essex (1978) traces the growth. By 1914 houses were going up south of the village in Station Lane and the roads beside it, and in Harrow Drive, north of Hornchurch Road. The 1920s and 1930s brought rapid building across central and northern Hornchurch; most houses built since 1918 are semis or short terraces, and those in the north were sold mainly to owner-occupiers. Grey Towers, the crenellated house that the brewery owner Henry Holmes built on Hornchurch Road in 1876, was occupied by the Army in the First World War, eventually as a New Zealand base camp, and was pulled down in 1931, and the site became Grey Towers Avenue. The old village itself turned into the shopping centre: at least 32 houses there were older than 1800 in 1953, and only 10 were left by 1976.
A semi of the 1920s or 1930s was usually built with a small kitchen at the back, and many have been refitted since, so the oven might be a built-in single, a built-under double or a range. Parking in Hornchurch
In December 2025 Havering announced that the Keswick Avenue car park would close in January 2026 and Dorrington Gardens in March, to make way for six three-bed homes and 34 homes. The council's notice names Fentiman Way, Billet Lane and Appleton Way as the car parks staying open. On-street pay bays on Station Lane and Hornchurch Road are charged from 8am to 6.30pm, with a three-hour limit and no return within two hours.
