In 1936 the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich cleared most of the orchards on the old Horn Park farmland and started building the Horn Park estate. The war stopped the work, and when it was finished afterwards the estate had about 1,100 homes.

The name is older than any of the houses. A manor called Horne is recorded here in 1242, and Horn Park was one of three deer parks belonging to Eltham Palace until the Civil War, when the deer were killed. By 1838 it was Horn Park Farm, 221 acres leased from the Crown, and the Crown took the land back in 1930. These dates come from the council's management plan for Horn Park, which also explains the path through the middle of the 6.7-hectare park: in the late 1940s Gavestone Crescent was laid there as a street of prefabs, and when they came down in 1968 the road surface stayed as a footpath.
Built to rent, the north end of the estate is now split between owners and social tenants. In the census area at that end (Greenwich 029D: Sibthorpe Road, the top of Alnwick Road and the Westhorne Avenue end), 48.2% of the 564 households owned their home in 2021 and 41.3% rented from a social landlord; 30.0% of all households rented from the council itself. Houses outnumber flats by a long way there: 42.6% of households were in a semi and 33.0% in a terraced house, with 13.7% in a purpose-built block.
Kitchens in 1930s and 1950s council houses
Council houses of both decades were generally built with small kitchens, so a 60cm freestanding cooker or a single oven under the worktop is the likelier fit. Where a kitchen has been extended, a double or a range may have gone in instead. Parking off Westhorne Avenue
Westhorne Avenue, along the north side of the estate, is the A205 South Circular, which is a red route, so stopping there is controlled by the red lines and signs. Inside the estate the picture changes. Royal Greenwich's CPZ map (which the council calls a guide only) shows no controlled zone on Alnwick Road, Sibthorpe Road or Gavestone Road, and the park plan says free parking is available on local side streets. Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
