One Tree Hill, the summit that gave Honor Oak its name, has been in Camberwell since boundary changes in 1901, and Southwark Council owns and manages it today. Honor Oak Park station and Brockley Rise, east of it, are in Lewisham.
In 1896 the Honor Oak and Forest Hill Golf Club rented the hill and put up a six-foot wooden fence without warning; on 10 October 1897 a crowd tore the fence and gate down. Camberwell bought the land under the LCC's General Powers Bill of 1902, and the park opened on 7 August 1905 with 8,000 people at the ceremony. The oak inside the iron railings at the top is the third, planted that year.
Houses on the slopes of One Tree Hill
On the Southwark side, Honor Oak Rise has brick houses from the early to mid 19th century that are listed at Grade II: numbers 30 and 32, and 36 to 40. Across the border in Lewisham, Walters Way is a close of 13 self-built timber-framed houses, put up by people from the council's housing waiting list using the method of the architect Walter Segal, after whom the street is named; the houses stand on concrete piles.
The census figures are more ordinary. In the census area the House of Commons Library calls Honor Oak (Lewisham 019, around the station), 30.9% of households had a terraced house in 2021, 26.0% a flat in a purpose-built block and 24.9% a flat in a converted or shared house. Just over half, 52.0%, owned their home.
A flat cut out of a Victorian house usually has a small kitchen and a built-in single. A whole house more often has room for a double or a range cooker. Parking near Honor Oak Park station
Lewisham's Honor Oak zone, HO, came in on 15 January 2024, and the council's zone table gives its hours as Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, so a weekend visit falls outside them, at the weekday price. The table lists no streets, so check the signs on your own road, and do the same on the Southwark side of the hill. The team needs somewhere to park.
