The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway opened Honor Oak Park station on 1 April 1886, and the housebuilders developing the ground around it put £1,000 towards the cost of building it. The houses were the point. The station was the sales pitch, and it sits 4 miles 59 chains from London Bridge, in zone 3, between Brockley and Forest Hill, an interchange now between the Windrush line and Southern.
The terraces arrived with the station
What those builders put up is the stock still standing: bay-fronted Victorian terraces off Honor Oak Park itself, the road that drops from the hill towards Brockley and SE4, with 1930s houses filling the gaps later. Houses of that shape kept a proper kitchen rather than a galley, so doubles and range cookers are ordinary here in a way they are not on an estate, and the hob at £23–28 usually goes on the same booking. The flats are conversions of those same terraces, and they run to a single at £77.
One Tree Hill was taken back by force
The hill gives the place its name. An oak at the summit marked the southern boundary of the Norman Honour of Gloucester, and Elizabeth I is said to have rested under it in 1602 on her way to visit Lewisham. In 1896 a golf club fenced the hill off, which brought large-scale protests, an occupation and the removal of the fences, with the Selborne Society and the Society for the Protection of Birds in the middle of it. The new Camberwell Borough Council compulsorily purchased it in 1905, and the oak up there now is the third, planted that year. ULEZ applies and the van is compliant.
