Homerton was written down from 1343, often as Humberton, a name that recalls the farm of a woman called Hunburh.
Council flats from Banister House onwards
Little from before the Victorians is left apart from Sutton House, built in the 1530s for Sir Ralph Sadler, which the Victoria County History calls Hackney's oldest domestic building; the National Trust has owned it since 1938. The same history, published in 1995, describes the district as one of housing estates, factories and small businesses. The borough council opened Banister House in 1935, 160 flats on cleared slums in Homerton Row and College Street, and added 235 more by 1960 after Homerton College was pulled down. Nisbet House, six-storeyed blocks with 311 flats, opened in 1938, and by 1970 Priory Court stood in Brooksby's Walk.
In the 2021 Census, 72.0% of the roughly 5,530 households in Homerton ward lived in a purpose-built block of flats and just 9.2% in a terraced house. Nearly half (49.7%) rented from the council or a housing association, 27.2% rented privately and 19.3% owned.
Kitchens in blocks of that age can be narrow galleys, with the cooker a freestanding one in a gap between the units. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Terraces east of Brooksby's Walk
A fever hospital went up along the Grove, now Homerton Grove, in 1870, and by 1874 it was blamed for driving the wealthier residents away. From the 1880s, terraces spread east of Brooksby's Walk along parallel roads: Glyn Road, called Pratt's Lane until 1881, was built up as far as Millfields Road by 1891, and the Victoria County History, published in 1995, notes many terraces still standing in Glyn Road and its neighbours. The fever hospital later became the Eastern Hospital, which closed in 1982; the present Homerton Hospital was completed on the site in 1986.
North of the High Street, Brooksby's Walk carries on as Chatsworth Road, which the company building the Clapton Park estate was extending across its land in 1867. East of Homerton, Hackney Marshes is 136 hectares of registered common land given over to pitches. In 1937 the London County Council took part of the marsh for the Kingsmead estate, whose blocks stand around Kingsmead Way.
