Holland House, built in 1605 for Sir Walter Cope and first known as Cope Castle, was badly hit in a ten-hour raid in September 1940; one wing survives as a youth hostel, and a stretch of the front terrace is used for the park's summer open-air theatre and concerts.
The Radfords' villas on Holland Park
The houses came later, on the old grounds. In August 1859 the builders William and Francis Radford agreed to build on the back park of Holland House beside the Uxbridge road. Nos. 1 to 78 Holland Park went up under that agreement and Nos. 79 to 89 under a second one of February 1864: four rows of identical detached villas, set so close together that they read almost as a terrace. Between the two long roads is Holland Park Mews, built as coach-houses and stables and entered at its western end through an archway; the Radfords' agreement called for seventy of them.
Whole houses are far more common here than across the borough. In the census area that takes in the street called Holland Park, its mews and Abbotsbury Road (Kensington and Chelsea 009D), 52.6% of the 531 households had a house to themselves in 2021, against 17.0% across Kensington and Chelsea. 64.3% owned their home.
Big kitchens, bigger cookers
A family kitchen in a house this size is more likely to have a double oven, a 90cm range or an AGA than a single, and a converted mews house usually has a compact kitchen. Each is cleaned the same way. Dust sheets go down; the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, and the door is split where its design allows. Addison Road and the W14 streets
Building on the Holland estate began further west. The first leases, dated 1 March 1824, were for the east side of Addison Road, where Snee's plots were sub-let to the builder William Woods, who put up a late-Georgian terrace of four-storey houses with stuccoed ground floors; it was demolished in 1961. Across the road, John Parkinson built ten houses in linked pairs in 1852 to 1855, now 50 to 59 Addison Road, and between 1857 and 1859 James Hall took leases for Nos. 1 to 38 Holland Villas Road and parts of Upper Addison Gardens.
These streets have W14 postcodes but are in Kensington and Chelsea, in Holland ward. Further west, towards Olympia and Brook Green, W14 belongs to Hammersmith and Fulham.

Parking round the park, Sundays included
On the council's residents' parking map of September 2024, the streets round Holland Park have residents' bays controlled until 10pm on weekdays and 1.30pm on Saturdays, so in those hours the van uses a pay-by-phone bay. Round Olympia that has changed. After consulting in 2025 the council left Holland Park and Holland Park Mews out of its plans when most local replies opposed them. It made its October 2025 parking order on 3 February 2026, and the order came into operation on 10 February 2026. It was made as advertised, apart from the Olympia-area proposals, which the council amended by dropping longer pay-by-phone hours south of Kensington High Street. For residents' and pay-by-phone bays on Addison Road, Holland Villas Road and Abbotsbury Road, among other streets, the hours are now 8.30am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 4pm to 10pm on Sundays. Sundays are the catch. Pay-by-phone bays are free on Sundays across most of the borough, but not in the Holland Park car park off Abbotsbury Road or in most of Holland ward. Check the plate for the hours in force before you tell us where to stop; the team needs somewhere to park.
