Hoddesdon Tower, a block of flats over shops, has stood at the north end of the Market Place since the mid-1960s, in the angle between Amwell Street and Burford Street where the High Street forks.

The market is far older than the tower. A weekly market and a yearly fair were granted to Richard de Boxe in 1253, and the town kept its medieval street plan well into the 20th century. Then, in the 1960s, every building at the north end of the Market Place between Amwell Street and Burford Street was pulled down, and the centre was rebuilt with blocks of flats and a shopping precinct. Broxbourne Council's 2011 appraisal of the Hoddesdon conservation area, first designated in June 1968, sets out that history.
Not all of the change was so large. Cedar Green, opposite Lowewood Museum, is a 1968 group of houses by the local architect George Mathers, set in a U shape around a green. South of the centre, Yewlands is a cul-de-sac of big detached houses built from about 1908 in the old grounds of Yew House. Two of them, Mandeville (1908) and Yewlands itself (1909), are Grade II listed Arts and Crafts houses.
Hoddesdon Town and Rye Park ward takes in the centre and Rye Park to the north. At the 2021 Census it had 4,205 households: 31.4% in a semi-detached house, 30.3% in a terrace and 25.2% in a purpose-built block of flats. Just 8.2% had a detached house.
A flat in one of the 1960s blocks is likely to have a built-in single under the worktop. A semi or a terrace is more likely to have a double, or an older freestanding cooker. The work is the same in both: racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. Parking a van in Hoddesdon
Broxbourne Council runs the town-centre car parks. Burford Street car park (EN11 8HP) has 37 standard bays, and there are two more car parks on Taverners Way. All three charge on weekdays and Saturdays, are free on bank holidays and have 2-metre height barriers. The team needs somewhere to park for the whole visit, so a drive or a space at the kerb outside the house is the better bet. Along Yewlands most houses have had part or all of the front garden remodelled for parking; elsewhere in EN11, the signs and lines on your own street decide where a van may wait.
