The Corbett estate's site office stood halfway up Duncrievie Road, opposite the junction with Wellmeadow Road. Houses only went up on that road in 1910, when the office was cleared and 12 were built on the last piece of Archibald Cameron Corbett's land.
The Corbett estate, 1896 to 1911
Corbett, a Scottish MP, bought the 278 acres of North Park Farm in 1896 and built across Hither Green and Catford over the next fifteen years. The Corbett Society counts 27 streets, named after places he had known in Glasgow and further afield, and 3,082 houses at the 1911 Census, from six-bedroom villas with servants' quarters down to three-bedroom houses with a downstairs bathroom. He was against drink, so the estate was built without a pub. He also persuaded the railway company to build a booking hall on the east side of Hither Green station, which had opened in 1895, and got cheaper season tickets for his residents.
Many houses nearby have since been divided. In the census area round Duncrievie and Brightside Roads (Lewisham 017D), 37.9% of the 723 households lived in part of a converted or shared house in 2021, about double the 18.4% for Hither Green ward. A quarter (25.2%) had a terraced house to themselves, and 34.6% rented privately.
Kitchens in a divided Corbett-era house
When a family house of this age is split into two or three flats, the kitchens are usually small: a built-in single under the worktop, or a 60cm freestanding cooker beside it. A house kept whole often has the kitchen opened into the back room, with space for a double oven or a range. The clean is the same either way. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors and the door is split where its design allows.

Parking either side of Hither Green station
The railway splits Hither Green into two of Lewisham's zones, with very different hours on the council's zone table.
- Zone H, Hither Green West
- Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm. On the council's map it takes in Elthruda Road, Springbank Road, Nightingale Grove and the north ends of Wellmeadow and Torridon Roads.
- Zone P, Hither Green East
- Monday to Friday, 10am to noon only. Staplehurst Road, Leahurst Road, Longhurst Road and Manor Park are in it.
Zone H is growing. In July 2025 the council's Mayor and Cabinet approved taking it into Benin Street, Blashford Street, The Woodlands and Woodlands Street, and parts of Hither Green Lane and Ardgowan, Minard, Wellmeadow and Torridon Roads; a statutory consultation follows once the designs are final. On the east side, a visit after noon avoids permit time. The team needs somewhere to park, so tell us the road when you book.
Questions about oven cleaning in Hither Green
Is Benin Street or Ardgowan Road in a zone yet?
Not on the council's map at the time of writing. Both are in the zone H extension approved in July 2025, which still needs a statutory consultation, so check the signs on the day.
Our house still has the original back kitchen with a range. Can you do it?
Yes. A 90cm range cooker is £143 and takes 2 to 3 hours.
Is all of Duncrievie Road part of the Corbett estate?
No. Only Nos 6 to 28 on the even side stand on Corbett land. From No. 30 up to Hither Green Lane the houses date from around 1928, long after the estate was finished, and they look different.
Can I book a Saturday?
Yes. Neither zone H nor zone P is controlled at weekends on the council's table, and a weekend visit costs the same as a weekday.

Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
