Hillingdon station was built on Long Lane in 1923, just inside the boundary with Ickenham; when the A40 was rerouted in the early 1990s the old building was demolished, and the new station built further south won Underground Station of the Year in 1994.
A ward name with a long history
Hillingdon East is a council ward, and has been since the borough was created in 1965, with boundaries redrawn in 2002 and again for 2022. The name is older still: from 1894 the eastern part of Hillingdon parish was a parish of its own, Hillingdon East, until it was merged into Uxbridge in 1938. How North Hillingdon was built
Western Avenue had reached Hillingdon Circus by 1933, and the county history records speculative building already under way south of the roundabout. The council built too. Its 220 houses on the Oak Farm estate, laid out on the former Rye Fields Farm in the 1930s, became the core of the new district of North Hillingdon. Private estates spread north from Hillingdon village along Long Lane and the east side of Vine Lane, and around Blossom Way and Sweetcroft Lane.
The result shows in the 2021 Census. Of 5,467 households in Hillingdon East ward, 36.5% lived in a terraced house and 31.6% in a semi; 66.4% owned, 19.9% rented privately and 13.0% rented from the council or a housing association. In the small area by the station on Long Lane (Hillingdon 014C) the terraced share was 57.3%.
