Highams Park station opened on 17 November 1873 under the name Hale End, and only settled on its present name on 20 February 1969.
The signal box at the Hale End Road crossing
A level crossing close to the station is the only place in Highams Park where vehicles can cross the railway. The signal box on Hale End Road was built by the London and North Eastern Railway in 1925, is locally listed, and was saved from demolition in 2002; it reopened in 2017 as a creperie. Highams Park also had the Halex works, which made plastics from 1897 to 1971 and had a near monopoly on table tennis balls.

Most of the district is Victorian and 1930s terraced housing. T. C. Warner's Highams Estate of the 1930s wraps round the park to the north and east, on roads such as Montalt Road, Keynsham Avenue and The Charter Road. Montalt Road and The Charter Road carry Woodford Green IG8 postcodes, yet the council is Waltham Forest and both sit in the Hatch Lane and Highams Park North ward.
The census area the House of Commons Library calls Highams Park East (Waltham Forest 007) had 3,850 households in 2021. 39.7% lived in a terraced house, 26.1% in a semi and 22.4% in a purpose-built flat. 68.0% owned their home, more of them with a mortgage (39.4%) than outright (28.6%), and 18.7% rented privately.
Terrace kitchens are often narrow, with a built-in single under the worktop or a slim freestanding cooker. That is no obstacle: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.

The Highams Park Station (HPS) zone
In 2023 the council introduced Highams Park Station (HPS) permit bays and single yellow lines, as a trial, on Beech Hall Road (from Beech Hall Crescent to Hale End Road), Beverley Road and Hale End Road between Larkshall Road and Beverley Road. They apply from 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, and the trial was made permanent on 26 September 2024. If you live in the zone, a visitor permit covers the van during the visit. The signs at the end of your road give the hours that apply on the day.

Can I book a Saturday to stay clear of the zone hours?
Yes. Weekends are at the weekday price, and on the three streets above the HPS controls are weekdays only. Check the signs if your road is anywhere else near the station.
