When Walthamstow's common fields were enclosed in 1850, St Andrew's Road was laid out at Higham Hill to join Blackhorse Lane to Common Lane, the road now called Higham Hill Road.
From hamlet to council estates
Higham Hill is on record as a hamlet in 1501, beside the manor house of Higham Bensted, on a steep rise about 75 feet high in the north-west of the parish. Its population had declined by 1756, and the Victoria County History records that the High Hall, Higham Hill and Salisbury Hall manor houses have all gone. Building on Higham Hill common had begun by 1876. After the First World War there was council housing on Millfield Avenue, and in the 1930s the council added the Essex Hall estate.
One older line is still on the map. Folly Lane is the medieval Amberland Lane, recorded in 1274 and running from Chingford Hall to Higham Hill; it was a horseway about 1527 and never improved, took its later name from the 'folly', a common way across it that was argued over in the late 16th century, and was still a narrow, tree-lined lane in 1971.
Who lives in Higham Hill ward
Those are 2021 Census shares for the ward's 4,983 households. Another 39.6% owned their home outright or with a mortgage and 20.2% rented privately; by building, 40.9% lived in a terraced house. At 5.1% (256 households), the shared-ownership share is more than twice that of Chapel End (1.8%) or William Morris (1.0%) next door.

Higham Hill's parking zones
On the council's March 2026 zone map, Higham Hill (HH) has core hours of Monday to Friday, 8am to 6.30pm, and so does Higham Hill North (HHN) in the north of the ward. Higham Hill East (HHE), which reaches across Billet Road towards Chapel End, has Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm. Inside zone hours the van needs a permit or a legal bay for the whole visit. The signs at your end of the street settle which zone you are in and the times that apply.

Yes, and weekends cost the same as weekdays. In the HH and HHN zones a Sunday or a Saturday falls outside the controlled hours; in HHE only Sunday does.
Is Higham Hill the same as Blackhorse Road?
They meet. The ward runs down Blackhorse Lane to Hookers Road and Sutherland Road, and the station area has its own Blackhorse Road page. William Morris is to the south-east.
Can the hob be done too?
Yes. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic one £23; on a freestanding cooker the hob sits on top and is cleaned in the same visit.
Will I need to take the day off?
Not the whole day. A single takes about 90 minutes, and someone should be there at the end to look inside the lit oven.
