Walthamstow's High Street was called Marsh Street until 1882. It ran west from Hoe Street to the common marsh and the parish mill.
The market and the homes above it
The street market started in 1885 and now fills about a kilometre of the High Street, open Tuesday to Friday from 8am to 5pm and on Saturday until 5.30pm. The council calls it Europe's longest outdoor street market. The Victoria County History dates the shift of the town centre here, away from the old village, to the growth of that market and to the Monoux school (1889), the public library (1894) and the baths (1900).
Much of the housing here is flats, some of them above shops. In the census output area round Buxton Road, Cranbrook Mews and Courtenay Place, at the western end of the market, the 2021 Census counted 184 households.
Across the whole of High Street ward, 18.4% of the 4,484 households lived in part of a converted or shared house.
Cleaning an oven in a flat over a shop
A flat over a shop is often reached by a side door and a stair, and its kitchen is small: a built-in single, or a slim freestanding cooker. Stairs mean more trips with the parts. Dust sheets go down first, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.

The HST and Market West parking zones
The council's map puts the streets just north of the market, Cottenham, Campbell, Hatherley, Eldon, Erskine and Storey Roads, in the High Street zone (HST). It is controlled Monday to Saturday from 8am to 9.30pm and on Sunday from 10am to 9.30pm. West of that, Warner Road, Northcote Road, Buxton Road, Carisbrooke Road and Somers Road are Market West (MW), controlled Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, with the High Street and Mission Grove car parks inside it.
The team needs somewhere to park for the whole visit. The signs on the street carry the exact hours, and the council describes its map as for reference only. A Sunday visit to a Market West street falls outside its controlled hours, at the weekday price.

Mention the floor and the stairs when you call; a flat over a shop is often reached by a side door and a stair.
