Walthamstow Market has run since 1885 and takes up all but the last hundred metres of the High Street, around 500 stalls along roughly a kilometre, Tuesday to Saturday, which makes it the second longest outdoor street market in Europe behind the Porta Portese in Rome. That shapes the working day here more than anything else does. Five days out of seven the High Street frontage is stalls, so a kitchen above a shop is reached from the side streets and not from the market itself.
Half houses, and what is in their kitchens
The residential grain behind the market is Warner. Thomas Courtenay Warner took on his father's Walthamstow estate in 1875, and from the 1880s the company put up the two-storey blocks it called half houses: an upper and a lower maisonette, a front door each, one shared garden. Leucha Road was among the earliest parts developed, in 1895, and is a conservation area now, sash windows and slate roofs kept as built. A half house gives you a compact kitchen, usually one freestanding cooker or a single integrated oven, so £77 covers most of them. The hood is the other thing in a small kitchen, and an extractor at £28 is often added on the same visit because grease has nowhere to go in a room that size.
Controls that run late
The old Walthamstow Market CPZ was carved into separate zones, and the one named High Street, HST, takes in Campbell Road, Cottenham Road, Eldon Road, Erskine Road, Storey Road and Truro Road. Controls around the market run well into the evening rather than stopping at half six, and the arrangements are still under an experimental order that has been extended into 2027. St James Street station and the St James conservation area, designated in 2002, sit at the western end of the same stretch.

Can you come on a market day?
Yes. We work seven days, and the booking is for your kitchen, not the kerb outside it.
My kitchen is tiny. Is there room to work?
There is, because the bulky part of the job is not in the room. The tank is heated in the van and the racks, shelves, trays and runners are carried out to it.
Is it suitable for an end-of-tenancy inspection?
Yes, and it is a lot of what we do in E17. The door glass is split where the design allows, which is the first thing an inventory clerk looks at.
Will there be a smell in the flat after?
There should not be. Nothing caustic comes indoors, so the cavity, fan cover and glass are hand-degreased with products that do not leave a fume.
