The Church of the Holy Innocents on Avey Lane was built in 1872-3 to designs by Arthur Blomfield, and its official list entry spells the place High Beech. In the 19th century High Beech became a church parish of its own, made from parts of two old hamlets of Waltham Abbey, Sewardstone and Upshire.
Houses in the forest at High Beach
The county history of Waltham Abbey says a sizeable village had grown up at or near High Beech, on the edge of the forest, by the end of the 18th century. Sewardstone Manor House, in chequered red and grey brick with Dutch gables, was built about 1700. By the middle of the 19th century other large houses stood in their own grounds, among them Roseville, Wallsgrove House and Beech House, which Richard Arabin built in 1848 and which is now Arabin House. Written in the 1960s, the same history lists The Owl pub and Springfield farmhouse on Lippitts Hill as weatherboarded 18th-century buildings.
The census still shows the pattern. In the small census area around the church, which takes in Avey Lane, Church Lane, Manor Road, Mott Street and Rat's Lane, two in three households (67 of 100) lived in a detached house in 2021, and 84% owned their home.
A detached house of that kind may well have a double oven, a 90cm range or an AGA; that is a general pattern, so tell us what yours is when you ring. Where the van stops at High Beach
The City of London Corporation looks after Epping Forest as its Conservators, and the forest has been public open space since the Epping Forest Act 1878. Its car parks at High Beach, Pillow Mounds and the Visitor Centre car park, are pay and display and can also be paid for by RingGo phone or app; the longest stay is six hours.
The team needs somewhere to park, so a drive or a space by the gate suits us far better. If the house has a name and no number, give us a landmark as well: the church on Avey Lane, the King's Oak, or the visitor centre on Paul's Nursery Road behind it, run by volunteers since 2014. On the lanes, the signs decide where a van may wait.
