Gas did not reach the whole of Hextable until 1926; before that, cooking was done on a coal kitchener or a paraffin stove, and electricity arrived in 1932. The Hextable Heritage Society's short history also explains why the village has no pub. John Todd, a temperance supporter who lived at The Lodge on College Road, built in 1887, bought up the corner plots and had a covenant written into their deeds so that alcohol could not be sold.
Villas, nursery roads and post-war closes
The village is newer than the name, which goes back to Hagestaple in 1203. After the Egerton estate was split in 1876, Hextable Farm was sold in plots to speculative builders. The first four large villas went up on Rowhill Road, and one of them was the home of Arthur Mee of the Children's Encyclopedia. Rollo Road cut off a corner of Pickle Field, which was divided into 76 building plots. Jacob Emerson bought land by the Crossways in 1879 and put up glasshouses that his family said were the first in the district; by about 1935 there were 38 nurserymen in the village.
Early in the 20th century a syndicate laid out six roads on Great Embrakes Field: Princes, Plantation, Bower, Maude, Mabel and Herbert, the last three named after James Dean's children. Dartford Rural District Council built houses at Fens Way and Midfield Avenue, Lower Road gained houses in 1950, Claremont Road grew from 1974, and Dawson Drive, Emersons Avenue and Squires Field followed in the 1980s and 1990s. So a Hextable kitchen might be in a Victorian villa with room for a range cooker, or in a 1990s house with a built-in double at eye level.

Hextable ward had 1,686 households at the 2021 Census. 44.7% lived in a semi-detached house and 29.7% in a detached one; only 6.5% were in a purpose-built flat. 84.5% owned their home, and 49.2% owned it outright.
