Most of our Herne Hill work is the Edwardian and 1920s houses on the streets around Half Moon Lane and Brockwell Park. These are family houses with proper kitchens, so the double oven is the everyday job here, and quite a few of the bigger ones have gone to a freestanding range. How we clean it
The racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van. Indoors, the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products, and the door is split where the design allows so the film between the panes comes off. There is no chemical smell left in the kitchen. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
Parking in the Poets' Corner
Parking is a real operational fact around the station. The streets between Railton Road and Dulwich Road, the Poets' Corner, run a controlled parking zone known as the PR zone, and it covers the poet-named roads: Shakespeare, Milton, Chaucer, Spenser and the rest. All of Herne Hill sits inside the London-wide ULEZ too. On a Sunday the market fills Railton Road right by the station, so we plan visits around it.
