On 30 March 1869 Lord Shaftesbury laid the first stone of a new suburban village on the market gardens north of Herne Hill station, with Milkwood Road and Lowden Road as its two main streets.
Milkwood Road's houses, sold by instalments
The Survey of London tells the story. In 1868 the architects W. G. Habershon and A. R. Pite agreed with the Ecclesiastical Commissioners to take a 99-year lease of 24 acres, and promised roads, sewers and between 480 and 650 houses. Buyers could pay a lump sum or spread the cost over 21 years, and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway's cheap workmen's fares brought them in. Within four years The Builder reported more than 200 houses and shops built and occupied on what had been market gardens.
The houses are terraces of stock brick with red-brick dressings and slate roofs, mostly two storeys, a few three, and some raised on semi-basements. Houses of this size are typically either whole family homes or split into two flats, with the kitchen at the back; either way the oven is usually a built-in single, a double or a freestanding cooker.
The method is the same in each. Dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand. The door is split where its design allows.
Herne Hill, the road between two boroughs
Lambeth's 2012 statement for its Herne Hill conservation area says the road called Herne Hill is the boundary, with the west side in Lambeth and the east side in Southwark, most of the Southwark side being inside Southwark's Stradella conservation area. On the Lambeth side, Herne Hill Mansions is a pair of red-brick and terracotta blocks of 1898-1900 that closes the view up the hill, and the former fire station of 1906 (No. 132) is on the same side. Across the junction in Southwark, the Half Moon pub on Half Moon Lane was rebuilt in 1896. At the bottom of the hill, Brockwell Park was the landscaped grounds of Brockwell House before it became a public park in the 1890s.
Who lives in Herne Hill East
The census area the House of Commons Library calls Herne Hill East (Lambeth 014), which takes in Milkwood Road and Lowden Road, had 3,739 households in 2021. 39.9% owned their home, 31.0% rented privately and 27.8% rented from a social landlord, mostly a housing association. 28.6% lived in part of a converted house, 21.8% in a terraced house and 11.0% in a semi-detached one.

Parking where the two councils meet
Parking follows the borough, not the postcode. On Croxted Road, south-east of Herne Hill station, the two councils share the bays: Lambeth's 2020 leaflets say Lambeth's zone H resident permits and Southwark's zone HH permits are valid on both sides of the road, so a Southwark HH permit works in a bay on the Lambeth side. Southwark's own zone HH, which its zone list labels Herne Hill, is controlled Monday to Friday, noon to 2pm. On the Lambeth side, hours differ from zone to zone and are on the sign as you enter and on each bay's time plate. Give us the street when you book, and we will plan for somewhere to park.
