Hendon Central station opened on 19 November 1923, when the land round it was still fields.
A Tube station that came before the houses
The station was the first stage of the Hampstead Tube's extension from Golders Green, and the end of the line until the trains ran on to Edgware in August 1924. Stanley Heaps designed it in a neo-Georgian style with a Doric portico, and it has been listed Grade II since 2011. It faces a circus 240 feet across, where four approach roads meet; for years this was a roundabout called Central Circus, and it is now a crossroads with traffic lights. The Underground company promoted it as the Piccadilly Circus of North West London. The Victoria County History notes that Queen's Road, which Watford Way crosses here, was formerly Butcher's Lane, and that by 1928 shops were spreading from Central Circus up to the Burroughs.
The houses followed fast. Anthony Badsey-Ellis's history of the line records 687 houses and other buildings put up during 1923 and plans for another 1,500 passed. By 1932 the writer William Passingham could describe the station as the centre of an ever-widening cluster of new houses.
Flats round the crossroads
Today the commonest home near the station is a flat. The census area the House of Commons Library calls Hendon Central had 4,503 households in 2021: 47.8% lived in a purpose-built block and 15.5% in a converted or shared house, while detached and semi-detached houses were 13.5% and 13.3%.
A kitchen in a block of flats often has a built-in oven, either a single under the worktop or a double in a tall housing unit. A single takes about 90 minutes and a double about two hours. Mention the floor when you ring and whether there is a lift.
