The reverse of Beatles records reads Hayes, Middlesex, because EMI pressed them on Blyth Road. That plant is now the Old Vinyl Factory, 17 acres of Wallis, Gilbert and Partners buildings bought for redevelopment in 2011 and turned into 642 homes plus offices and a cinema, the biggest scheme in the borough. The Nestle factory up the road ran from 1929 until 2014 behind an Art Deco front.
Two kinds of kitchen, a mile apart
Hayes grew out of five villages, Botwell, Hayes Town, Hayes End, Wood End and Yeading, and the housing follows that history rather than any plan, so a technician can spend the morning in a factory-conversion flat with a fitted integrated oven and the afternoon in an interwar garden-suburb semi where the cooker stands free against the wall. The new flats almost all take a built-in single oven at £77. The older streets are likelier to have a freestanding double or a 90cm range.
The Elizabeth line put pressure on the rentals
Hayes and Harlington station sits on the Elizabeth line, direct to Paddington one way and Reading the other, which has kept the letting market here moving. End-of-tenancy work follows that. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave, which is what a check-out clerk wants written down.
The canal runs through the middle
The Grand Union Canal cuts through the town centre, and the streets off Station Road and Coldharbour Lane are tight. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to a heated tank in the van, so we need a space near the door rather than space in your kitchen. Is this the same Hayes as the one in Bromley?
No. Two Hayes, one name. This page covers Hayes in Hillingdon, UB3 and UB4, the Hayes and Harlington one. Hayes in Bromley is BR2, right across on the south-east side of London, and it has its own page.
Will the flat smell of chemicals afterwards?
It should not. The soaking is done outside in the van. Indoors the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products.
My oven is integrated and I do not want it pulled out.
It stays where it is. Only the removable parts travel, and they come back in before we heat-test it.
Do you work weekends in UB4?
