The yew in the churchyard of St Peter and St Paul, on the Harlington side, is reckoned to be over a thousand years old and possibly the oldest in the country. Until about 1825 its annual clipping was a Whitsuntide event. The church behind it is Grade I listed, twelfth century in the main, with a fourteenth-century chancel and a fifteenth-century tower.
Where Hayes stops and Harlington starts
The old boundary between the two ran along North Hyde Road and Dawley Road, and the double-barrelled name survives largely because the railway kept both halves of it. The station opened in 1864 as plain Hayes. Harlington below it stayed village-shaped: six pubs, a library, Harlington School, and listed survivals such as Veysey's Farm and Shackle's Barn sitting among later housing. The composer William Byrd lived here as a Catholic recusant between 1578 and 1588, and a local primary school carries his name.
Airport Junction sits beside the platforms
The flyover just west of the station is what lets trains peel away to Heathrow without blocking the fast lines, and off-peak the Elizabeth line runs four trains an hour to Terminal 4 and two to Terminal 5. The station handled 8.45 million entries and exits in 2024-25 across five platforms, one of them a bay terminus. Yes. It is heat-tested and signed off before we leave, so it goes straight back into service.
