When the Great Western opened a station here in the 1860s it was called plain Hayes, and it stood in Botwell, a hamlet that a survey of the 1590s found to hold one tenement and one cottage.
A station named after two places
Hayes and Harlington was the name, from 1930, of the urban district that covered Hayes, Harlington and Cranford until the London Borough of Hillingdon was formed in 1965; the name lives on in the station and the parliamentary seat. Harlington village itself is further south, round its Grade I listed church of St Peter and St Paul, and has its own page: Harlington. Flats by the station
Industry made this corner. The Gramophone and Typewriter Company, later EMI, came in 1907. Its works on Blyth Road were redeveloped from 2011 as the Old Vinyl Factory, with flats and offices, and Enterprise House, one of the old EMI buildings there, is listed Grade II. Newer blocks near the station include Trident House on Station Road and the Vantage Building on Station Approach.
At the 2021 Census one small area round the station had 697 households, and 73.9% lived in purpose-built flats. Renting was the norm: 63.7% rented privately and 15.9% from a council or housing association, while 13.1% owned and 6.5% had shared ownership.
Flats of this age usually have a built-in single oven under the worktop or in a tall unit, and a tenancy that ends here will normally have the oven on the checkout inventory. Parking round the station
