Havering-atte-Bower stands about 100 metres up on a ridge three miles north of Romford, with the B175 running past a village green that was kept open when the surrounding commons were enclosed in 1814.

The royal palace that gave the Liberty of Havering its name stood near the church and was in ruins by 1650; nothing of it is left. The council's appraisal describes North Road as a busy street tightly enclosed by houses, the road north of the green as kerbless and unmade, and the houses on the west side of Orange Tree Hill as having front-garden parking. The clean is of the oven, not the building. The racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are done by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets.
Is the village the same place as the borough?
No. The London Borough of Havering was formed in 1965 from Romford and Hornchurch and took its name from the medieval Liberty, whose palace stood here. The village is the cluster round the green.
