Hatcham Park Road began as Five Bells Lane. A Mr Hardcastle, owner of the Hatcham Park mansion on the Haberdashers' Company's land, built the first houses on it in 1848, and in January 1850 it was renamed.

By the mid-1890s the estate was finished. Most of it is two-storey stock-brick terraces; Nos. 1 to 27 Hatcham Park Road and the three-storey houses on Nettleton Road have basements.
In a terrace like these the kitchen is usually at the back of the ground floor or in a rear addition, and the cooker is likely to be a freestanding one or a built-in single.
