The Victoria County History says the district became known as Harold Wood from its railway station. In 1866 a group of developers led by Hugh Campbell bought 300 acres of Gubbins farm, set up the Harold Wood Estate Company and agreed with the Great Eastern Railway to build a station, which opened in February 1868.
A planned town that grew slowly
The company wanted a new town, but until the First World War Harold Wood was hardly more than a village. John Compton bought the estate in 1877 and built himself a house, the Grange, in 1884. Between the wars estates were laid out round Church Road, at Redden Court and west of Gubbins Lane. The heavy clay here shrinks, which tended to damage two-storey houses, so a number of small bungalows were built in the 1920s and 1930s.
In 2021 Harold Wood ward had 5,643 households. Semis were the commonest home (43.0%), 71.0% of households owned, and a third (33.0%) owned outright. Kings Park, on the old hospital site
The Grange became a West Ham convalescent home for children in 1909 and grew into Harold Wood Hospital, which closed at the end of 2006. The NHS sold the site to Countryside Properties in March 2007, and it is now the Kings Park estate, with streets such as Firwood Lane. In the census output area that takes in Firwood Lane, 155 of the 179 households lived in a purpose-built flat in 2021, and 78 (43.6%) were in shared ownership.

Parking near Harold Wood station
In 2024 Havering was adopting most of the roads in Kings Park, and the estate's private parking scheme was due to end when it did. In September and October 2024 the council consulted on a residents' parking scheme for the adopted roads, pointing to the estate's closeness to the station.
