The London County Council's Harold Hill estate was announced in the Romford Times in September 1945, had its first permanent home handed over in November 1948 and was finished by 1958, with homes for about 25,000 people on what had been the farmland, woodland and parkland of the old Dagnams estate.
Harold Hill's post-war council houses
The land bought for the estate included most of the farms sold in 1919, among them Brick Kiln (also called Hilldene), Harold Hill, Gooshays and New Hall, and the tree-lined avenue that led to Gooshays Farm was kept as the approach to the estate centre. The plan was two neighbourhoods of roughly 10,000 people each, with shops, eleven schools and a lot of open space, and the larger houses were put near the green belt. Prefabs meant to be temporary were not all gone until 1969, after which the Briar Road estate was built on their site.
Houses still make up most of it. In Gooshays ward, which takes in the eastern half of the estate, 35.6% of the 6,581 households lived in a terraced house at the 2021 Census and 34.1% in a semi, with 22.2% in a purpose-built block of flats. Just over half (51.1%) owned their home, and 30.2% rented from the council, against 9.3% across Havering.

New flats at Chippenham Road and Farnham and Hilldene
Havering and its building partner Wates are rebuilding the middle of the estate. Phase two is 138 affordable homes in four blocks on empty land off Chippenham Road and Kings Lynn Drive, next to the Farnham and Hilldene shopping centre; it was given planning consent in February 2025. Phase three, sent in for planning in April 2025 and approved by Havering's strategic planning committee on 13 November 2025, would replace homes on the Farnham and Hilldene estate with 481 new ones; residents had voted 96.3% in favour on a 49.8% turnout.

Parking near your door in Harold Hill

About two hours. It is heated once it is back together, and you look inside before we pack up.
Is the oven cleaned in my kitchen?
Yes. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand indoors, on dust sheets, and the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Some teams use a heated tank when they can park close; otherwise everything is done in the kitchen. The price is the same either way, and you can ask when you book.
Can you come on a Saturday?
