Harmondsworth is a village of roughly 1,500 people with a medieval barn in it, and about 750 of its homes sit inside the footprint for Heathrow's third runway, which the government picked as its blueprint in November 2025 with a full public consultation due this summer and no final decision expected before 2029. Freestanding 60cm units are the norm, plenty of them fifteen years old or more, with the enamel worn and the door seals hardening. Old ovens need a gentler hand. Caustic paste on a tired enamel cavity takes the finish with it, which is why the caustic stays sealed in the heated tank in the van and never comes indoors.
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in that tank while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products. Door split where the design allows. Heat-tested before we sign it off.
The village and the van
Access is easy by London standards. High Street and the roads round the green are unrestricted for the most part, there is no station to pull commuter parking in, and the A4 Bath Road plus the M4 get us in without much trouble. The pinch is the far end towards Longford, where the lanes narrow and the airport perimeter traffic backs up. Harmondsworth is inside the ULEZ but a long way outside the North and South Circular.
