In 1729 Harlington's parish clerk, John Saxy, published an engraving of the clipped yew in the churchyard at the north end of the High Street; the tree was cut as topiary until 1825 and collapsed in 1958, though part of its trunk lived on.
Harlington High Street, from village to UB3
The High Street was the village's own road, running north from the Bath Road towards Uxbridge, and the church was probably on its present site at its north end by the 11th century. By 1901 the parish had some 350 houses. Before 1930 Staines rural district council put up 78 council houses at West End, and in 1930 the parish was joined to Hayes, in an urban district renamed Hayes and Harlington. Almost all the land south of the Bath Road was requisitioned for the wartime airfield and became part of London Airport, opened to civil flights in 1946. The old core is now the Harlington Village conservation area, designated in 2005 and extended in 2015.
Flats and lets round the village
Many homes round the village are flats. In the two Census areas that take in the High Street, West End Lane and Little Elms, 716 of the 1,497 households (47.8%) lived in a purpose-built block of flats in 2021, and 722 (48.2%) rented privately; across Hillingdon, 25.9% rented privately.
A flat kitchen usually has a built-in single oven under the hob, or a freestanding cooker in an older block. Either way the dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors. Zone H1 and the Stop and Shop bays
On the council's March 2026 map of parking management schemes most of Harlington's built-up area is shaded, with Stop and Shop bays marked on the High Street. Stretches of the High Street, West End Lane, Manor Lane, New Road, Sipson Lane and Little Elms are on the Zone H1 list of the council's Heathrow parking management scheme. In the draft 2026 order the H1 bays on those streets run Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and some bays on the High Street, West End Lane and New Road are shared with pay and display.
