Two interwar estates sit either side of the road here and they produce two different kitchens. West of it is the Hanger Hill Garden Estate, mock-Tudor, built between 1928 and 1936 to designs by Douglas Smith and Barley, with Queens Drive, Links Road, Monks Drive and Princes Gardens inside it; a lot of those addresses are maisonettes rather than houses, so the kitchen is narrow and the cooker is a freestanding single or a slot-in with a grill above. East of Hanger Lane the Haymills Estate runs in crescents of Tudor Revival, Neo-Georgian and Moderne houses, and those are the ones with a proper kitchen and, often enough, a wide cooker in it.
Wide cookers turn up on the Haymills side
A 90cm range cooker in a Haymills crescent house is £114 and takes longer than a double, because the burners, pan supports, both sets of shelves and the runners all go into the tank while the two cavities get degreased by hand. The Garden Estate maisonettes are usually a straight single at £77. Both estates are conservation areas, which is why the kitchens have been reworked inside far more often than the outsides suggest.
The gyratory decides where the van goes
The A406 through here is a TfL red route, so stopping is not an option, and the gyratory where it meets the A40 takes something like 10,000 vehicles an hour at peak. A 2007 survey once had it voted the scariest junction in Britain. In practice that means we come off and park inside the estate roads, which are quiet, and walk the parts back. It adds a few minutes. It does not add to the price.

Do you clean AGAs around here?
Yes. A two-oven AGA is £143. They show up in the larger Haymills houses more than anywhere else in W5.
Will there be a smell afterwards?
No. The caustic side of it happens in the tank outside in the van, and everything done indoors is non-caustic, which matters in a maisonette kitchen with one small window.
How long does a single oven take?
Around ninety minutes, a double nearer two hours. We heat-test it and sign it off before we go.
Can you get the door glass clear?
Usually. Where the design allows we split the door and clean the inner faces, which is where the brown film actually is.
