Hanger Lane station opened on 30 June 1947, a fortnight after Brentham station, a short way to the west, closed for good; the road just north of Brentham station, Brentham Halt Road, was renamed West Gate in 1980.
Living beside the Hanger Lane gyratory
The junction took its present shape in stages. A 240-metre tunnel was dug in the 1960s to carry the A40 under Hanger Lane, and the western side of the loop was added in the early 1980s, which made it a gyratory. At rush hour it carries nearly 10,000 vehicles an hour, and the station sits inside it, reached only by subways. Hanger Lane itself is the North Circular here, so the team needs a space on a side road.
Haymills houses and flats over the parades
East of Hanger Lane, the Victoria County History notes, detached houses went up in avenues before and after the Second World War. The Haymills Estate there is laid out in crescents of Tudor Revival, Neo-Georgian and Moderne houses on the site of Hanger Hill House, and has been a conservation area since 1996.
The 2021 Census for the small area covering Ashbourne Road, Connell Crescent and the parades (Ealing 011C) shows that mix. Of 800 households, 46.5% lived in a purpose-built flat, 20.8% in a detached house, 12.6% in a converted house and 4.0% above a shop or in another commercial building. Half rented privately (49.9%), and 42.8% owned. These streets are in Hanger Hill ward, which Ealing's selective licensing scheme has covered since 3 January 2023, so a landlord here generally needs a licence for a private let.
So the kitchens differ a lot within a few streets. A flat over a shop is more likely to have a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker; a detached house may have a wide oven or a range.

Is Hanger Lane the same as Hanger Hill?
The road takes its name from the hill, from the Old English hangra, a wooded slope. The Tudor-style Garden Estate south-east of here, around Queens Drive, has its own Hanger Hill page.
Our flat is above a shop on Royal Parade. Can you still do it?
Yes. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; tell us the floor when you book.
The tenant has left and the agent holds the keys. Can you collect them?
