Hampton's old core is a triangle of three streets, the High Street, Church Street and Thames Street. The church there, St Mary's, was designed by Edward Lapidge and built between 1830 and 1831.
Walled houses and pavement cottages in old Hampton
In the old core, larger 17th and 18th-century houses are often set back behind high brick walls, while small two-storey cottages sit hard against the pavement. One of the large houses is Garrick's Villa, which is Grade I listed: the actor David Garrick bought it in 1754, Robert Adam worked on it in 1756 and 1775, and Garrick built his Temple to Shakespeare on the riverbank across the road. When the tram arrived from Hampton Court in 1903, the wall in front of the villa was set back 6 feet to make room for double tracks. The council's appraisal notes that the village streets are fairly narrow and that many are now dominated by heavy traffic.
Waterworks, Plevna Road and the Rosehill cottages
The 1852 Metropolis Water Act stopped companies taking drinking water from the tidal Thames, and three water companies (Southwark and Vauxhall, Grand Junction and West Middlesex) set up works at Hampton, along the Upper Sunbury Road. The four engine houses of the waterworks are Italianate, in Gault brick, and all listed Grade II. The railway followed in 1864, and by the end of the 19th century three roads of two-storey terraces had been laid out between Station Road and the Upper Sunbury Road: Plevna Road, Avenue Road and Belgrade Road, the last of them with the larger houses.
After the local council bought Rosehill, it built 56 workmen's cottages in 1903 and 1904 along Beard's Hill, Oldfield Road and Rosehill. Richmond Council's 2023 appraisal of the Hampton Village conservation area counts them among the earliest purpose-built council houses in the country. A kitchen in a small terraced house like these often has a built-in single or a freestanding cooker, and the job is the same as anywhere: racks, trays and runners out to be soaked and cleaned separately, cavity, fan cover and door glass degreased by hand indoors.

The Census area that the House of Commons Library names Hampton Village held 4,254 households in 2021: 30.0% in semi-detached houses, 23.2% terraced, 19.9% in purpose-built flats and 17.9% detached. The detached houses, such as those around Douai Grove and Warwick Close, are the likelier home for a range cooker.

Is there a parking zone in Hampton village?
Not on the council's current list of zones, which has Zone H for Hampton Court but no zone for the village. Check the signs on your street. The village roads are narrow and busy, so if you have a drive the van can use, say so when you book.
I live in one of the Rosehill cottages. Is a small kitchen a problem?
No. The kitchen only needs a working socket and the oven cool when we arrive.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes. We work seven days a week, and weekends cost the same as weekdays.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
