The 1863 cottages still decide the kitchen size
When St James's Church went up in 1863 its first vicar, Fitzroy Fitzwygram, set about building cottages for the labourers working on the Hampton waterworks, and those terraces are still standing. Their back kitchens are small. A freestanding 60cm cooker fills one wall, the door opens into the walkway, and there is nowhere to put a rack down that is not the floor or the hob. So the racks go straight out to the heated tank in the van and the kitchen stays walkable while we hand-degrease the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass with non-caustic products.
Out towards Bushy Park and the golf courses the houses get bigger and the cookers follow, with 90cm ranges and the occasional AGA. The Longford River is the line between Hampton Hill and Hampton, and the change in kitchen size roughly tracks it.
Flats above the shops come down a staircase
Hampton Hill High Street is mostly independents. That is the normal job here. The bulky parts leave the room and soak in the tank in the van, so what stays in your kitchen is one technician and a cloth.
How long will you need?
Ninety minutes for a single, about two hours for a double. A 90cm range is £114 and takes a bit longer again.
Which stations do you work around?
Fulwell and Hampton both serve Hampton Hill on the Shepperton line, but we come by van, so the High Street and the roads off it are what matter to us. Parking on the parade is short-stay, so we tend to leave the van on a side road and walk the crate.
