Hampton Hill began as New Hampton, a settlement that grew on the old Hampton Common beside Bushy Park, and it only took its present name in 1890.
From New Hampton to Hampton Hill
Richmond Council's appraisal of the High Street conservation area tells the story. By 1848 the settlement could support its own shops. Between 1850 and the early 1860s hundreds of artisans arrived to build the Hampton waterworks and the railway. Much of the housing was poor, and St James's Church was consecrated in 1863. Its first vicar, Fitzroy John Fitzwygram, and his wife spent their own money replacing what the appraisal calls "miserable hovels" with brick cottages at affordable rents. Some survive, with rubble walls faced in thin brick tiles. The High Street was widened in 1910 for double tram tracks, and the Bushy Park wall still runs along its eastern side.
Cottages and terraces off the High Street
The appraisal describes the small side streets off the High Street as narrow, lined with small terraces and cottages, and foreshortened by the railway cutting. Cross Street is a mix of two-storey terraces and cottages; Windmill Road is a wider through road that crosses the railway to Uxbridge Road. Edward Road has mostly semi-detached Victorian villas of about 1895, and Park Road has some Italianate semi-detached houses in yellow brick with red brick bands. A cottage or small-terrace kitchen is more likely to have a built-in single or a freestanding cooker than a range. Either way the method is the same: racks, shelves and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned in the kitchen, by hand.
