Houses from Hampstead's spa years
By about 1700 both Flask public houses existed, the Upper Flask at the north end of Heath Street and the Lower Flask in Flask Walk near the High Street, and the social life of Well Walk pushed settlement farther east. Burgh House, in New End Square, was built in 1703 for Henry and Hannah Sewell, a Quaker couple. On the south side of what became Church Row, Richard Hughes had built eight houses by 1713. The Flask Walk end became more working-class: workers' cottages, Nos. 35-47 (odd), were built there in the early 19th century, and Thomas Gardnor built Nos. 53-67 (odd) on the site of the parish pond in 1811.
In the Census area round Flask Walk, Heath Street and the High Street (Camden 002C), 21.2% of the 783 households had a whole house in 2021, and 11.6% lived in a commercial building, such as a flat over a shop. Council flats round Burgh House
Some of Hampstead's social housing dates from just after the war. Bombing in the Second World War hit the two acres between Well Walk, New End Square and Christchurch Hill hardest, and only five houses there survived. The council opened two blocks of flats called Carnegie House in New End in 1948, then cleared the bombed site and, in 1950, opened Wells House: 64 flats in wings round Burgh House, which the Victoria County History calls 'tactfully Georgianizing'.
In an upper flat in a block like that, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.

Parking in the village's CA-H(b) zone
Flask Walk, Heath Street, the High Street, Well Walk and Hampstead Square all fall in Camden's zone CA-H(b), which is controlled from 9am until 8pm, Monday to Saturday. Church Row, just to the south-west, has its own zone, CA-H(d), controlled from 9am to 10pm. A Camden visitor permit is for a resident's own visitors.
