The Victoria County History says another 411 acres of Hampstead Garden Suburb, extending into Finchley, were leased from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1911, and that this part was built after the First World War with J. C. S. Soutar as chief planner. Its houses are a generation younger than the Artisans' Quarter cottages over in NW11.
Market Place, Hill Top and Brim Hill
Soutar's first block of shops with flats above went up at Market Place in 1922, and three groups of flats followed along Lyttelton Road between 1929 and 1936, built for rent for people of modest incomes. Lyttelton Road was never meant as a main road; it became part of the Barnet bypass in 1926 to 1928 and was designated the A1 in 1983. North of it, Hill Top and Hill Rise were built from 1927 and Ossulton Way into the mid 1930s, running from Arts and Crafts brick near Market Place to white-rendered Moderne houses towards East End Road. Brim Hill followed, 1931 to 1938: mostly semis by architects including C. M. Crickmer, C. G. Butler and Ernst Freud, aimed at car owners and at commuters using the new East Finchley Tube station.
Most homes here are houses. In Garden Suburb ward, which also takes in the NW11 side, 21.8% of the 4,894 households counted in the 2021 Census lived in a detached house and 33.1% in a semi; 69.3% of households owned their home and 39.1% owned it outright. A large family kitchen in a house of this size is more likely than a flat kitchen to hold a double oven, a 90cm range or an AGA.
Trust consent, Article 4 and the cooker
Barnet made the Suburb a conservation area in 1968 and soon after added an Article 4 Direction over most of it, so minor outside works such as replacing external doors, windows or roofing materials, laying hardstandings and adding porches can need planning permission. On top of that, the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust has run a Scheme of Management since January 1974. The Trust's own guidance says that some inside work needs changes to the outside, such as new pipework, flues or vents, and those need its consent, which matters if a new range cooker needs an extractor ducted through a wall.
A clean touches none of that. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, with dust sheets down first.

No. The Trust requires consent for any external change to a Suburb property, and an oven clean changes nothing outside.
When should the AGA go off?
The night before. Cast iron holds its heat for hours and it needs to be cool when we arrive. The AGA care guide has more on looking after it between cleans.
Can the van go on my drive?
If you are happy for it to, yes. Almost every house round Ossulton Way, and many on Brim Hill, was built with a garage or drive.
I am in a flat above the Market Place shops. Is the price different?
