Hammersmith Grove was laid out in the 1830s or 1840s, and its first houses were built as substantial semi-rural residences. Most of the remaining buildings in the conservation area date from the 1880s.

The council made the Grove a conservation area on 8 September 1982, and its profile picks out the older groups. Woolmer Cottages, Nos. 39 to 81, are early Victorian semi-detached villas that already appear on the 1853 map; they were built as single-family houses, and some had been converted to multiple occupation when the council wrote its profile. Verulam Terrace, Nos. 185 to 215, is a stucco set piece of three storeys over semi-basements. Albion Terrace, Nos. 83 to 115, is a parade of shops with homes above, built by Richard Albion Halliday around 1870, with The Grove pub at its southern end. The profile calls Essex Court, a block of eight flats from 1951 on the site of Nos. 167 and 169, the only modern building in the area.
A villa split into flats, or a home over a shop, usually means a compact kitchen up a staircase, with a built-in single under the worktop or a freestanding cooker between the units. The visit works the same at any height. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets. Parking in zone K
The north end of the Grove and Richford Street are in the council's parking zone K, controlled Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The council's table lists the Richford Street area of the zone separately, with controls every day from 9am to 8pm. Is my street in the all-week part of zone K?
The council names the Richford Street area as the part of zone K controlled 9am to 8pm every day; the rest of the zone is weekdays only, 9am to 5pm. The signs in your street say which applies.
Can I book for a Saturday?
Saturdays and Sundays are bookable at the same price as Monday to Friday. Most of zone K has no controls at weekends, though the Richford Street area does.
How long will a double oven take?
About 2 hours, against about 90 minutes for a single. The oven is put back together and heated at the end, and you look inside it before anything is packed away.
