The Hammersmith flyover opened on 16 November 1961 and carries the A4 for 622 metres over and beside the Broadway gyratory; building it took much of St Paul's churchyard.
Homes round a traffic junction
The Broadway itself is shops, offices, the bus station and the Tube, and the council made it a conservation area in June 1986. People live in the streets round it. In Hammersmith Broadway ward, 65.4% of the 3,608 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats at the 2021 Census. Renting was the norm: 37.8% of households rented from the council or a housing association and 36.2% rented privately, while 24.4% owned.

Peabody says the whole estate was designated a conservation area in 1992.
A flat in a block of that age usually has a small kitchen with a built-in single or a freestanding cooker. From an upper floor the method is the same: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.
Georgian houses on Lower Mall
West of Hammersmith Bridge the ward reaches the river. Lower Mall is in The Mall conservation area, designated in 1971, and the council's profile calls the stretch up to the bridge one of Hammersmith's best streets. No. 22 has been divided into a pair of semi-detached Georgian houses, Westcott Lodge and Eastcott Lodge. Furnivall Gardens next door was laid out in 1951, after wartime bombing destroyed the old riverside quarter called Little Wapping.
A large old house can hold a bigger cooker than a flat: a built-in double, a 90cm range, sometimes a two-oven AGA. An AGA has to be switched off the night before so it is cool when we arrive, and the clean takes about half a day.

Parking in zone A: 8.30am to 11pm, every day
The Broadway, the Peabody estate and Lower Mall all fall in the council's parking zone A, one of the zones controlled every day: Monday to Sunday, 8.30am to 11pm, with a two-hour maximum stay. Set that against the time on site:
- Single oven
- about 90 minutes, inside a two-hour stay.
- Double oven
- about 2 hours, right at the limit.
- 90cm range or AGA
- 2 to 3 hours for a range, half a day for an AGA, longer than pay and display allows.
Residents in a controlled zone can apply to the council for a visitor permit and book a RingGo session for a visitor's vehicle in a bay outside the home during control hours; the council sets no maximum stay on these sessions. If you have one, a session for the van is worth booking for anything longer than a single; if not, tell us the street when you book so we can plan the parking. The council issues separate parking permits for housing estates, so on an estate ask the estate office where the van can stop.

Can the extractor hood be cleaned at the same visit?
Yes. An extractor is £28 on its own, and a double oven, hob and extractor done together are £143. Say so when you call so the time is allowed for.
I live on Lower Mall. Can you park by the river?
Lower Mall is zone A too, with the same daily hours and two-hour limit. For a range cooker, a visitor session booked for the van saves watching the clock.
What if I am not happy with part of the oven?
You look inside the reassembled, heated oven before we pack up. If a corner is not right, we put it right before we leave.
