In the Middle Ages this was the north-east corner of Walthamstow parish: people here were recorded as living at The Hale in 1285, at Woodend in 1477 and at Hale End by 1498.
The old green lane to Hale End
Larkshall Road and Hale End Road follow a lane that ran down from Chingford, called Green Lane in 1368 and later Jack's or Inks Green Lane. It passed Jack's farm on the way to Hale End and carried on south to Wood Street and Whipps Cross. Jacks Farm Way, a short walk west of the station, has the same name. The name Hale End has also travelled south: it is used along Hale End Road below the North Circular, in E17, where the council has a parking zone called Hale End Area.

After the First World War Walthamstow's council built an estate at Hale End, on The Hale, and after the Second it added municipal schemes such as Oak Hill Court in 1950. Both sit in the present Hale End & Highams Park South ward. They overlap. The streets round the station are usually called Highams Park now, and the former ward of Hale End and Highams Park joined the two names.
