A lot of Hale End is Warner-built, and it changes the job. The two-storey Warner maisonettes and the semis around The Avenue and Hale End Road tend to be owner-occupied family homes, so the ovens have often been used hard for years rather than reset between tenancies. The Warner streets and the estate above
Higher up sits the Highams Estate, more than three hundred semi-detached and detached houses that Thomas Courtenay Warner laid out in the 1930s. It has been an Area of Special Character since 1988, with an Article 4 direction from September 2020. The larger detached corner houses are where we meet the occasional range cooker; the standard semis run to a single or a built-in double.
The method is the same on all of them. Shelves, trays and side runners lift out into a heated dip tank in the van, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so nothing smells of chemicals once we finish. A single is about ninety minutes, a double nearer two hours.
Parking, the lake and the door
Parking is easier here than in inner E17. Most of Hale End is free to stop on, with the one controlled zone around the Tesco and the town centre by Highams Park station, so the van usually gets close to your door. That matters, because the trays travel to the tank and back. E4 is inside the ULEZ, and some of the streets nearest the River Ching and Epping Forest are narrow, which is worth a mention when you book.

Usually, yes. The dip tank handles years of baked-on grease, and the hand work brings back the cavity and glass. Heavy ovens take a little longer, not more money.
Is the price higher for a detached house on the estate?
No. A single is £77 and a double £110 whether the kitchen is in a maisonette or a large detached house. Only a range or an AGA changes the figure.
