The Avenue and Hale End Road by the railway are the centre of Highams Park, and a stretch of handsome old shopfronts survives along there. Highams Park station sits on the Overground Chingford branch, about twenty-two minutes into Liverpool Street, and the residential turnings off Oak Hill and Handsworth Avenue are mostly quiet with driveway parking, which makes ferrying the dip-tank gear in straightforward. The tank heats in the van. Indoors we degrease the cavity, fan cover and door glass by hand with non-caustic products, so there is no chemical smell left behind.

Because so many of these are family houses that have been extended, the double oven clean at £110 is our commonest booking in E4, more so than in the flat-heavy postcodes to the south. The racks, shelves and trays from both cavities go into the heated tank; the two cavities and both door glasses are hand-cleaned. Prices are fixed on the phone. There is no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.

How long does a double take?
Around two hours. A single is about ninety minutes, and we heat-test the oven before we leave.
