Hacton had a bridge by 1299. The wooden crossing was reinforced in the 1660s so that it could take horse-drawn carts hauling corn to Romford market, and the first brick bridge went up in 1728.
The name is a description of the ground
The name is a piece of description rather than a person: Hacton means the farm on a hook-shaped piece of land, from the Saxon haca, a hook, and it sits on the tongue of ground formed where the Ingrebourne meets a tributary. Medieval Upminster had three separate clusters of settlement, and Hacton was one of them, alongside the village itself and Corbets Tey.
What sits on Hacton Lane now
William Braund built Hactons between 1762 and 1765, at the junction of Little Gaynes Lane and Hacton Lane. The stretch today is mostly detached and semi-detached housing on generous plots, with Hacton House giving the lane a small block of flats and Hacton Primary School close by. That is a split kitchen market: freestanding and built-under doubles in the houses, integrated singles in the flats. Hob cleaning on Hacton Lane runs £23–28 depending on the type.
How the work is split between the van and the kitchen
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out and soak in a heated tank in the van, which is where the mess stays. Indoors it is hand work on the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass, with non-caustic products. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
