Hacton had a bridge over the Ingrebourne by 1299. In the 1660s the carpenter repairing it was persuaded to make it a cart-bridge, because the road carried corn to Romford market, and a brick bridge replaced it in 1728.

Hacton was one of the three settlements of medieval Upminster, with the village and Corbets Tey. Hacton Lane crosses into the old Upminster parish at Hacton Bridge and runs south to Hacton Corner, where it becomes Aveley Road. On the Hornchurch bank, Hacton Farm is thought to have been rebuilt in the late 16th century; Edward Jackman, an alderman of London, bought it in 1561, and in 1594 it was the seat of his son John and one of the principal houses of Hornchurch.
The Upminster side has Hactons, which William Braund, a Portugal merchant and City financier, built between 1762 and 1765 where Little Gaynes Lane meets Hacton Lane. It is red brick with stone dressings and two lower wings that held the kitchens. After military use in the Second World War it stood empty until 1954, when it was turned into flats.
Semis and racecourse roads in Hacton ward
Hacton is also the name of a Havering ward on the Hornchurch side of the river, mostly in RM12 6. It takes in Suttons Lane, Winifred Avenue and Central Drive, and a run of roads with racecourse names: Goodwood Avenue, Plumpton Avenue, Fontwell Park Gardens, Epsom Way and Haydock Close. At the 2021 Census the ward had 3,359 households. Most lived in a semi-detached house (69.4%), 14.1% in a terrace and 10.3% in a purpose-built flat; 83.0% owned their home, and only 10.5% rented privately, against 15.8% across Havering.
A semi like these usually has the oven either at eye level in a tall unit or built under the hob, and a family kitchen often has a double.
