Between December 1940 and 1946 about 2.2 million cubic metres of concrete, brick and stone rubble from air-raid damage were tipped onto Hackney Marsh, lifting the ground by three metres, and the flat green surface that came out of it was seeded for 135 football pitches. The London County Council had bought the rights and the landowners' interests for £75,000 in 1890 to keep the 337 acres open. Around 80 pitches are marked now, down from 120 at the peak in the 1950s and 60s, when better than 2,500 players came down every Sunday morning.
Nobody actually lives on the Marshes
The Marsh is 136 hectares of protected common on the west bank of the Lea, and it is one of the largest pieces of common land in Greater London, so the bookings come from the ring of housing around its edge rather than from the grass. The Kingsmead Estate is the main one. Its ground was taken out of the marsh in 1937, 22.5 acres of it, and the flats there are compact, which usually means one oven under the worktop. That is a single oven clean at £77.
The Homerton Road side is newer
Lesney built the die-cast factory that turned out Matchbox cars in the 1940s, on the strip between the Hackney Cut and the Kingsmead, next to Marshgate Bridge on Homerton Road. It stood until around 2009, when it came down for housing. Flats put up on that ground are new enough to have integrated ovens and hoods rather than a freestanding cooker, so the work there is a different shape to the estate work fifty metres away.

Can you park near the block?
Usually. The van needs to be within reach of the flat, because the heated dip tank is built into it and the racks and trays go down to soak.
I am moving out and the agent wants the oven done. Is this that job?
Yes, and a lot of E9 work is exactly that. The removable parts soak, the glass is split where the door allows it, and the cavity is degreased rather than wiped over.
Is anything caustic used in the flat?
No. Hand work indoors uses non-caustic products, so no chemical smell is left behind.
