Reading Lane, by Hackney Town Hall, was called Grove Lane and, before that, Cut Throat Lane; the Victoria County History describes it as a humbler terrace at the village's south-western corner in 1831, and it has had its present name since 1913.
The streets behind Hackney Town Hall
The present town hall was built between 1934 and 1937 on the west side of Hackney Grove, with Hillman Street behind it. Its predecessor of 1866 stood on the old green in front, which became the civic garden. Hackney made the area round both the town hall and the Hackney Empire, opened in 1901, a conservation area in 1995 (Town Hall Square), and added the Mare Street conservation area to the south in 2000.
Round the town hall the Victoria County History (1995) finds a wholly urban scene of shops and public buildings, with older houses surviving only in isolation off Mare Street. One is No. 33 Hackney Grove at the corner of Reading Lane, half of an early 19th-century pair with two storeys, an attic and a basement. Part of Wilton Way began as Potts Mews, coach houses for the houses on the Grove. West of Mare Street, terraces filled the market gardens after the branch railway opened in 1872.
East of Mare Street, when the crowded courts between Morning Lane and Paragon Road were cleared, most of some 500 people were resettled in Valette Buildings (1904), among the London County Council's first flats in Hackney; around 1960 the last slums off Morning Lane made way for its Trelawney estate. Close by, Nos. 71-83 Paragon Road go back to a building lease of 1809; the Newlon housing trust bought the seven survivors around 1979 and restored them as pairs linked by single-storey Doric colonnades, Hackney's earliest example of that type.
A basement kitchen in an old house, or a flat in a block with a lift or a stair, is worth mentioning when you call. Racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Over dust sheets, the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand, and the door is split where its design allows.

Zone D runs until 11pm
The town hall, Mare Street and Morning Lane sit in zone D (Hackney Central). The council's zone list gives its hours as 8.30am to 11pm, Monday to Saturday, so an evening visit does not escape them. Some outer streets belong to zone D var (Hackney Central and South), where control ends at 6.30pm, also Monday to Saturday. Sunday is outside both.
