Grove Park is named after Grove Farm, a small farm near today's Somertrees Avenue, and the station that borrowed the name opened in 1871.
Grove Park grew up round the 1871 station
Lewisham's local history sheet on the area says much of the land was dug for brick earth in the mid-19th century, and that the name Burnt Ash comes from 18th-century woodland cut down and burned for charcoal. The station brought commuters, though farming, dairy farms and plant nurseries especially, carried on. Edith Nesbit, author of The Railway Children, lived on Baring Road, and a footpath to the nature reserve is called Railway Children Walk.
The council built the Grove Park Estate in the 1920s. Private builders added houses between the wars, helped by the electrification of the line to central London in 1926, and the last farmland was built on in the 1960s. The workhouse put up in 1902 for the poor of Greenwich was used by the Army in the First World War, then became Grove Park Hospital. It is housing now, with some of the hospital buildings kept.
Semis and terraces with room for a bigger cooker
Grove Park ward had 6,303 households at the 2021 Census. 31.5% lived in a terraced house and 26.7% in a semi, against 30.1% in a purpose-built block of flats. Half (50.8%) owned their home, 26.6% rented from the council or a housing association and 21.2% rented privately.

Zone D round Grove Park station
The streets nearest the station are in zone D, Grove Park. On the council's parking map that means Somertrees Avenue, Le May Avenue, Balder Rise, Amblecote Road, Wydeville Manor Road and the west end of Chinbrook Road, plus Downham Way, Ivorydown and Gareth Grove on the far side of the railway. Lewisham's zone table gives its hours as Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm, so a weekend visit is outside them, at the weekday price. Further out the map shows no zone, but Grove Park was one of the areas in the council's 2025 parking consultation, whose replies the council says it is still analysing, so check the signs. The team needs somewhere to park.

It is inside Grove Park ward, but at the ward's northern end, so it is closer to Lee station than to Grove Park station. The prices are the same either way, and the streets north of Lee station are on the Lee Green page.

Yes. A 100cm range is £167, and the hob or hood of a range cooker is £48 on top. Say the width when you call.
Can you come on a Saturday to avoid zone D?
