Until the 20th century there were no main roads through Greenford parish at all: in 1754 the village lay on a triangle of roads formed by Ruislip Road, Coston's Lane and Oldfield Lane, and Greenford Road was only built through the middle of the parish in 1924.
Greenford, built up in the 1930s
The parish was merged into the borough of Ealing in 1926. Western Avenue opened across it in 1934, Whitton Avenue followed, and the Victoria County History says that nearly all the building of the thirties was speculative and that development of the parish was virtually complete by 1939. Ealing council built 409 houses between 1927 and 1939, most of them on the Windmill Lane estate and on the Cowgate estate of about 1933, and after 1945 it added 251 more, the Ravenor Park estate among them.
A good part of Greenford's housing is therefore interwar semis and terraces with the kitchen at the back, and houses of that age are often knocked through or extended later. Greenford Quay, the canal-side flats
The newer Greenford is by the Grand Union Canal. Greystar bought the former GlaxoSmithKline and Sunblest bakery sites, 20.3 acres in all, in January 2016, and has planned 1,965 homes there in studios and one- to three-bedroom flats; 1,439 of them are to be let by Greystar and 526 sold.

Greenford station has been on the Central line since 30 June 1947. Its streets, including Birkbeck Avenue, Jeymer Drive, Middleton Avenue, part of Oldfield Lane North and long stretches of Greenford Road, are in Zone Q, controlled from 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm on weekdays. Coston's Lane and Oldfield Lane South, nearer the old village, appear on none of the council's zone lists. The team needs somewhere to park close by.
